What is the best used SUV to buy?
SUVs are no longer the tall, off-road focused vehicles that they once were. In fact, compared to similarly priced sedans, the SUV offers additional foul-weather capability, similar on-road dynamics, fuel economy, and increased passenger/cargo capacity. Given this information, it’s no mystery to us why Americans choose SUVs nearly 2 to 1 over traditional sedans.
With so many great entries into the SUV market, most customers are left wondering what the best SUV to buy is. If you’re wanting a used SUV, the question becomes even more difficult, since different year models might have different features or reliability concerns.
Here at CoPilot, we have access to some of the best used SUV listing data in existence. We also crawled through user reviews, reliability reports, cost of ownership data, market data, and more to create a list of the best used SUVs on the market at the end of 2020 / beginning of 2021. Then, we argued a lot about which SUVs were truly the best deals. Finally, we voted for our favorite model in each category.
Here are the CoPilot staff’s choices for the best used SUVs to buy.

For those looking for an SUV that masquerades as a luxury, sport sedan for a discount price — look no further.
The best used midsize SUV
2018 Subaru Outback
Average listing price — Certified Pre-Owned: $25,796
Average listing price — Non-certified: $24,718
Average mileage: 31,302
J.D. Power Reliability Rating: 3 ⁄5
Although the 2018 Subaru seems like more of a wagon in appearance, it’s capability and quality place it near the top of the midsize SUV class. Talk to anyone who owns a Subaru and you’ll be quickly flooded with compliments for a brand is among the highest in repeat buyers for good reason.
Standard, full-time, symmetrical all wheel drive makes the Outback feel safe and secure in even the worst conditions. Exemplary safety scores, industry leading safety tech and superb visibility. Passengers enjoy tons of space and cargo carrying capacity is equally impressive.
A fuel efficient 4 cylinder engine is standard, while a powerful 6 cylinder brings additional power for those that demand it. For those looking for something unique, reliable, safe and capable — look no further than the Outback.
The best used large SUV
2019 Chevrolet Traverse
Average price paid (CPO): $25,796
Average price paid (Non-certified): $24,718
Average mileage: 31,302
J.D. Power Reliability Rating: 3. 5 ⁄5
When you’re on the hunt for an SUV that can move around a large family, the 2019 Chevrolet represents a sort of “in-between” type of vehicle that straddles the line between a mid-size and a full-size SUV.
The Traverse is our pick because of its positively massive interior that has the ability to swallow cargo of all shapes and sizes with ease. It has an easy to use infotainment system and one of the smoothest, quietest rides in the segment. 8 passengers and their all their stuff can come along for the ride — which is tops in this segment and bests some full-size vehicles.
Throw in a powerful engine that returns downright respectable fuel economy, better than average reliability ratings and a low cost of ownership and you have our winner.
The best used full-size SUV
2018 Ford Expedition
Average price paid (CPO): $45,455
Average price paid (Non-certified): $44,165
Average mileage: 34,662
J.D. Power Reliability Rating: 4. 5 ⁄5
If you’re in the market for a Full Size SUV, there is no better vehicle than the Ford Expedition. This big bruiser does what a full-size SUV does best, haul people and their stuff with absolute ease.
Not only can the Expedition haul people and their stuff with ease, it can also tow a boat or trailer while doing it with the might of a twin-turbo V-6 that puts out over 400 HP. Seating for 9 full size adults, luxurious interior options and exemplary safety scores make this the ultimate family vehicle. It also happens to pull an incredibly good 4. 5 ⁄5 for reliability.
For those that truly need the ultimate SUV that does it all with ease, the Expedition should be at the top of your very short list.

And even if you don’t, it seems there are an awful lot of people interested in this type of car, judging by the way these vehicles have risen up the list of our most popular reviews.
Fortunately, you don’t need to have a huge income if you buy one used. So, to help you decide which model to go for, we’ve put together a list of the top 10 used luxury SUVs. We’ve not set any price limits because each example is worth considerably less than when it was new, representing great value for money.
So, read on and we’ll tell you which ones should be on your shortlist.
Porsche Cayenne
If the BMW X5 was the car to show the world how to make big SUVs handle like a well-sorted estate car, then the Porsche Cayenne was the one to make them feel like a sports car. Admittedly, its ride can be a bit firm, but the upside is that it can negotiate a country road far faster than any other off-roader. And it isn’t just quick in the corners; there’s a Turbo S version with 562bhp. We’d stick with the very impressive 3.0-litre diesel, mind.
We found: 2018 Porsche Cayenne S 3.0 diesel Platinum, 51,500 miles, £32,995

Mazda CX-5
Price from £15,000 Our pick 2.0 SE-L Nav
In the pantheon of desirable used SUVs, ranging from the weeny Suzuki Ignis at one end to the mighty Bentley Bentayga at the other, you might think that picking out just one as an exemplar of the breed would be hard work. But as it turns out, it’s surprisingly easy, with the Mazda CX-5 standing head and shoulders above all others.
Now in its second generation, Mazda’s distinctive family SUV has always been one of our favourites. For starters, keen drivers who aren’t ready to sacrifice their ideals on the altar of family-friendly transport will love it for its agile handling. The CX-5 has built up a reputation over the years as one of the better driver’s cars in the SUV sector, and it’s well deserved, with echoes of the marvellous Mazda MX-5 sports car in the way it can attack roundabouts or dispatch a winding country road. It’s much more fun to drive than a used Hyundai Santa Fe or used Kia Sorento, for example, and more economical than both of those rivals to boot.
Meanwhile, families will love its interior. For the driver, it offers a lofty seating position and easy-to-use controls, including an intuitive dial between the front seats for operating the infotainment system; this is easier and less distracting to use than a touchscreen when on the move. Occupants get to enjoy acres of space, too; indeed, the CX-5’s slightly larger dimensions give it the edge on practicality over five-seaters such as a used Seat Ateca or used Skoda Karoq. Furthermore, the CX-5 is handsomely equipped, robustly built and full of high-quality materials.
Not only does the CX-5 have an excellent reliability record, but when it comes to value, few can match it in any class. What do we mean by value? Well, you can put a 2018 CX-5 on your driveway now in our favoured 2.0 SE-L Nav trim for as little as £15,000 – less than half the price of a new one – while a 2019 example will set you back only around £17,000 and a barely used 2020 model a very reasonable £20,000. At such prices, it easily fends off the likes of the BMW X1 and Volkswagen Tiguan, both of which are far more expensive to buy at the same age.

Seat Arona (2017-present)
Price from £10,000 Our pick 1.0 95 TSI SE Technology
One fact that’s reiterated every year at our used car awards is that if you’re looking for a competitive car on a tight budget, you’d be well advised to start with the Seat brand.
For example, buyers after a small SUV should seek out a used Seat Arona, for the simple reason that here is a compact car that is stylish, practical and perky. Bought used, it’s pleasingly affordable, too; with prices starting at around £10k, it’s much cheaper than rivals such as the Audi Q2 and Volkswagen T-Cross.
