VW Amarok Gets The Arctic Trucks Treatment
But don’t rush to the dealership — it’s only a one-off.
Renowned off-road modification company Arctic Trucks has created a one-off «Icelandic-spec» version of the Volkswagen Amarok pick-up truck.
The company, which shot to fame after preparing a Toyota Hilux for a Top Gear expedition to the Magnetic North Pole, has previously applied its know-how to many UK-market pick-ups.
Back in 2016, the company helped launch the Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35, and it has since created beefed-up versions of the Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux.
For the first time, though, the Icelandic firm has tuned a Volkswagen Amarok for use as a support vehicle for driving experiences during the Arctic winter.
Upgrades are, as you might expect, numerous. The suspension has been lifted by 25 mm (1 inch) at both the front and rear, while new wheel arches have been fitted to accommodate the enormous all-terrain tires that surround 17-inch alloy wheels. Oversized mud flaps have also been fitted to protect the car from flying stones thrown up on Icelandic tracks.
Here are other tricked-out Amarok pickup trucks
Inside, the car comes with a fire extinguisher, a portable generator and, perhaps incongruously, a cappuccino machine. A VHF radio, toolbox, and jack have also been fitted, and should the worst happen while the vehicle is exploring the wilderness, there’s also a first aid kit with a defibrillator.
Under the chunky hood is the same 3-liter V6 diesel engine you’d find in the standard Amarok. Producing 221 horsepower, it helps the Arctic Trucks Amarok achieve the same 45-degree climbing ability and carry a payload of 1,154 kilograms (2,544 pounds). And like the standard model, it also features Hill Descent Assist to stop the vehicle from running away when descending the slippery volcanic slopes of the Icelandic countryside.
Nick Axtell, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ specialist sales manager, said the Arctic Trucks Amarok was proving itself in some of the toughest situations a vehicle could encounter.
“The Volkswagen Amarok has been a massive hit since its introduction and we’re delighted to see it proving its worth in some of the toughest conditions in the world,” he said. “For British drivers, the standard Amarok will be able to cope with everything winter has to throw at it.”
“Back in the UK, the ability of our van centres to convert vehicles through recognised partners remains one of our unique selling points. It doesn’t matter whether that’s fitting racking for a plumber, refrigerators for a supermarket chain or something altogether more extreme like the AT35 – we are always committed to working with you.”

- First-ever Icelandic-spec Volkswagen Amarok conversion revealed
- One-off Volkswagen Amarok AT35 is being used as a support vehicle in Arctic winter
- Expedition makeover features a portable generator and cappuccino machine
- Unique model also features the standard vehicle’s class-leading load platform
A one-off Volkswagen Amarok designed exclusively for life in the Arctic Circle has been revealed with a raised ride height, huge all-terrain tyres – and a cappuccino maker.
The unique pick-up truck, modified by off-road specialists, Arctic Trucks, in partnership with local Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealer, Hekla, is currently being put to work in Iceland as a support vehicle for winter driving experiences, leading customers out onto the snow and ice.
The Volkswagen Amarok AT35 features a raft of updates to take the standard Amarok to the next level including a 25 mm front and rear suspension lift. New flared fibre-glass wheel-arches have been trimmed to accommodate the larger wheels and the 315/70R17 all terrain tyres – plus larger mud flaps front and back have been added.
Inside, the Amarok has been given an expedition makeover with a fire extinguisher, portable generator – and even a cappuccino machine. A VHF radio, toolbox, jack, first aid kit with defibrillator and work light are also included in the Arctic Trucks conversion.
Under the bonnet is the standard Amarok’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine with 224 PS to ensure there’s plenty of power to get through any snow drifts. The AT35 also retains the standard Amarok’s 45-degree climbing ability, a payload of 1,154kg, Hill Descent Assist and the widest load platform in its class.
Nick Axtell, Specialist Sales Manager for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “The Volkswagen Amarok has been a massive hit since its introduction and we’re delighted to see it proving its worth in some of the toughest conditions in the world. For British drivers, the standard Amarok will be able to cope with everything winter has to throw at it.”

Volkswagen Reveals One-Off Arctic Amarok AT35
The modified Volkswagen Amarok AT35 is the result of a collaboration between Arctic Trucks (off-road specialists that have previously worked with Toyota on their Hilux) and Hekla – a local Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealer. Iceland is the current home of the AT35 where it will act as a support vehicle for customers on winter driving experiences. There is currently no price tag for the unique pick-up as it is a one-off.
Outside Features – Including 315/70R17 all-terrain tyres
This iteration of the Amarok has a whole host of aesthetic changes, front and rear suspension has been raised 25mm, larger wheels have been added along with 315/70R17 all-terrain tyres meaning new fibreglass wheel-arches have had to be trimmed to accommodate. It certainly looks the part for a winter expedition!
Inside – A Cappuccino Machine?
The interior of the AT35 is packed full of useful features that you might need to survive in the Arctic. A fire extinguisher, a toolbox, a VHF radio, a jack, a portable generator, a first aid kit (with a defibrillator) and, to top it all off, a cappuccino machine!
3.0-Litre V6 Diesel Engine
The Amarok’s stock 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine will ensure that you have enough power for any situation in the snow and ice. The widest load platform of any pick-up truck, the ability to climb at a 45-degree angle and the maximum payload weight of 1,154kg from the standard Amarok all remain on the AT35 so it certainly isn’t lacking in practical or technical capabilities.

Nick Axtell, Specialist Sales Manager for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, commented: “The Volkswagen Amarok has been a massive hit since its introduction and we’re delighted to see it proving its worth in some of the toughest conditions in the world.
