New Toyota Land Cruiser Teased With Classic FJ62 Design Cues [UPDATE]

Toyota is looking to the past for the design of its Defender rival.

Update: Added seven additional teaser images showing details of the exterior, along with a look at the center console. This is noteworthy, as it shows a toggle for four-wheel-drive modes similar to the Lexus GX, suggesting it will be all-paw all the time.

Toyota is back at it again, building up anticipation for its new Land Cruiser via another teaser with retro leanings. Luckily for us, the latest image of the forthcoming off-roader does away with the silhouettes, giving us a close-cropped look at the front fascia, among other things.

Pictured alongside a Land Cruiser FJ62, it’s clear the new model (likely to arrive for the 2025 model year) will take some inspiration from its 1980s forebear via a rectangular headlight array flanking an egg-crate grille, with “TOYOTA” script taking the place of the oval brand emblem in the center. The front fenders are also delightfully blocky, though the hood wrapping down onto the bodysides is a clearly modern touch.

The chunky front bumper is yet another deviation from the retro theme, but that’s to be expected given modern crash standards. The new Land Cruiser gets a thick, contrast-color center section, and although Toyota didn’t include much of the lower front end, it appears the bumper is placed reasonably high to preserve approach angles. A skid plate can also be seen peeking out from the middle.

The Previous Generation Land Cruiser In Action:

The teaser helps draw some clear distinctions between the Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus GX. As we saw in the previous teaser, the Land Cruiser’s upkicked beltline and upright windshield are clear indicators that the two will likely share a platform and body structure. But the Toyota’s blockier front end is better suited for its intended audience than the angular headlights and spindle-motif grille found on the Lexus.

For more details, including dimensions and powertrain specifications, we’ll likely have to wait until Toyota reveals the 2025 Land Cruiser in full. But its GX cousin makes use of a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 making a fine 349 horsepower and an even more impressive 479 lb-ft of torque, with full-time four-wheel drive, a Torsen center differential, and a selectable low range for rock-crawling twist.

Toyota Teases a Shadowy Silhouette Of Its Next-Generation 2025 Land Cruiser SUV

With roots that day back some six and a half decades, Toyota’s Land Cruiser platform is nothing short of legendary, with an ever more modern and refined take on the SUV with each new iteration. After taking the vehicle off of the market in 2021, the Japanese firm has now revealed that it will soon be reviving the nameplate with the upcoming 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. And, while the company has yet to announce any hard information or specs, it has treated us to our very first glimpse of this next-gen SUV in the form of the Land Cruiser’s shadowy silhouette set alongside an original ‘60s era FJ40.

Though the marque has yet to confirm it, the images that Toyota has revealed very much suggest that the upcoming Land Cruiser will be based on the exact same platform as the freshly unveiled 2024 Lexus GX. This notion becomes abundantly clear when viewing the silhouette in the teaser image alongside a profile shot of Lexus’ all-new GX. What this means is that the 2025 Land Cruiser will be built atop Toyota’s TNGA-Frame platform, with this body-on-frame model sporting a double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link solid-axle setup in the rear.

It’s also suspected that the GX’s twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 will come under the hood of the forthcoming Land Cruiser — probably as a standard option too. Appearing to also be noticeably smaller than Toyota’s international J300 model, the 2025 Land Cruiser will almost certainly be produced in several off-road-leaning trim levels, including a TRD Pro version, and possibly a Land Cruiser equivalent to the GX’s Overtrail trim level. We also expect different versions and trim levels of the SUV to be offered in different markets and regions.

Thus far, Toyota has yet to reveal any information or specifics on the forthcoming SUV, though we anticipate additional intel and details to trickle out over the coming months ahead of the 2025 Land Cruiser’s eventual reveal.
