Jeep Mojave vs. Rubicon: What’s the Better Off-Roading Trim?

and the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon are the dynamic duo of the off-roading experience. Both trims are cut from the same cloth yet each has something different to offer the off-road adventurer. Your choice between the Jeep Mojave vs. Rubicon depends on individual preference and which challenging terrain you decide to conquer.

continues to skyrocket in America’s automotive market. The Gladiator has proven its mettle, leading the way in durability, off-road settings, and meeting expectations. Jeep’s Mojave and Rubicon Gladiator trims are the kings of the off-road lifestyle. But which is better?

Both the Mojave and the Rubicon Gladiator trims feature the high-performance capabilities you expect from an exceptional off-road truck. Surprisingly, they don’t differ regarding the powertrain. Each of them uses a 3.6-liter V6 putting out 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The Mojave and the Rubicon are available in 6-speed manual drive or 8-speed automatic if you prefer. All Jeep Gladiator off-road packages are four-wheel drive with transfer cases and are known for their solid axles designed to withstand the pounding of unforgiving terrain.

There isn’t a whole lot of difference in styling between the two trims. The Mojave does feature some identifying orange stitching and accents throughout. The Gladiator Rubicon and Mojave both use Fox shocks, though the Mojave’s shocks are larger than the Rubicon’s. The Mojave also includes a set of specifically-designed Fox hydraulic jounce bumpers.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Updated In Europe Where It’s Now PHEV-Only

It comes as no surprise that Jeep will only offer the Wrangler in Europe in its PHEV configuration starting for 2022. Earlier this year, Jeep announced it would cut the two-door Wrangler from its European lineup, where tightening emissions regulations made it impossible to continue offering the gasoline engine. We knew six months ago this was coming, but Jeep made it official today by announcing the 2022 Wrangler lineup for the Old Continent.

Europeans will have to opt for the four-door Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid for their off-road adventures, and the order books are open now at Jeep showrooms in Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Serbia. Jeep will add access to more countries throughout the month of December. The Wrangler 4xe pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motors and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, delivering a robust 375 horsepower (280 kilowatts). It offers up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) of nearly silent all-electric range.

Automatic high beams, collision warning with brake assist, and adaptive cruise control are all new standard equipment, joining blind-spot monitoring, rearview camera, and front and rear park assist, which were already available. Jeep is also offering its Performance Parts Gorilla Glass windshield, which is standard on the Rubicon trim and optional on the Sahara.

The Jeep also gets new factory colors – Silver Zynith Metallic Clear Coat and High Velocity Metallic Clear Coat, and special-run colors Tuscadero and Gobi. Jeep will offer Tuscadero from now through January 2022, with Gobi being available through Summer 2022. Jeep is also giving the off-roader a new Sunrider flip top that joins the three-piece hardtop, the soft top, the power soft top, and the topless configurations.

The hybrid-only Wrangler in Europe is part of Jeep’s commitment to sell 70 percent of the global Jeep range as electrified vehicles by 2025.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe Is No Ordinary Entry-Level Off-Roader

comments

The Wrangler Willys 4xe will act as the new entry-level variant of the 4xe, starting at $53,995 excluding a $1,595 destination charge and before the $7,500 federal tax credit.

Like the “normal” Wrangler 4xe, the new Willys version is driven by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder working alongside an engine-mounted motor generator unit, a motor generator unit integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 400-volt 17 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery pack. All up, it is good for 375 hp and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque and is rated at 49 MPGe over the combined cycle.

Jeep has equipped the Willys 4xe with LED headlights and fog lights as standard, while also installing rock rails, a black grille, and 17-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in 255/75 mud-terrain tires. A Willys decal is also found on the hood while Electric Blue accents adorn the front and rear tow hooks, the Jeep badge, and the Trail Rated badge.

Elsewhere, the Wrangler Willys 4xe features a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, all-weather floor mats, a rear limited-slip differential, and can be optioned with an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system and the Sun and Screen Package that adds the popular One-Touch Power-Top.

Three key driving modes are available, consisting of Hybrid, Electric, and eSave. The first of these blends power from the 2.0-liter engine and the electric motor while in Electric mode, the off-roader acts as an EV until the battery reaches the minimum charge or when the driver fully depresses the accelerator. In eSave mode, power from the 2.0-liter is prioritized, saving battery charge for later use.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe can be customized with various Jeep Performance Parts from Mopar, just like other Wrangler models.

“Jeep Wrangler 4xe customers looking for the ultimate combination of capability and electrification, with a vintage twist, can now have it in the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Willys 4xe,” said Jeep’s boss, Jim Morrison. “The debut of the new heritage-inspired 2023 Wrangler Willys 4xe pairs 49 MPGe, 470 lb.-ft. of torque with unmatched Jeep capability, a 2.72:1 4WD low range ratio, heavy-duty Dana 44 axles and a new entry price point to the 2023 model year Wrangler 4xe lineup, which continues to be the best-selling plug-in hybrid in America.”

Jeep Shows Off All-Electric Jeep Recon 4xe Off-Roader That’s Set for Production in 2024

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe has been out for a while now, highlighting Jeep’s hybrid gas-electric powertrain capability. Then, there’s the Jeep Magneto, a Jeep Wrangler concept vehicle with an all-electric driveline conversion.

So the off-road world was wondering when an all-electric Jeep 4×4 would arrive. And it seems like the Jeep Recon will be it.

Introduced among a handful of other electric vehicle announcements as part of “Jeep 4xe Day,” the Recon certainly looks the part of a bona fide off-roader. It’s got the requisite slotted grille, rear-mount spare, an off-road wheel/tire package, and tow hooks. Even better, the doors come off and there’s a massive opening sunroof to deliver the authentic open-top Jeep experience.

Yet, as alluded to above, this sucker’s electrical, and will be offered exclusively with battery power. Jeep says no gas or hybrid Recon variants are planned.

Jeep also explains that the Recon will wear a Trail Rated badge, thanks to a four-wheel drive powertrain, the Jeep Selec-Terrain traction management system, and E-lockers fore and aft. But the company was conspicuously mum on the Recon’s range and power specs.

We don’t anticipate the Recon to replace the Jeep Wrangler, but it certainly points to the direction that Jeep’s going with its 4xe off-road electrification plans. And Jeep also makes sure to mention that the Wrangler 4xe is America’s best-selling plug-in hybrid, so the 4xe strategy appears to be working so far.

Though Jeep didn’t mention exactly when the Recon will hit dealer showrooms, the release did explain that we’ll see pre-production units in 2023 with mass production officially beginning in 2024. And Jeep also reiterated that every vehicle in its lineup will have an electric variant (hybrid or all-electric) by 2025.

You can register online to reserve a Jeep Recon 4xe electric 4×4 starting sometime next year.

Ultimate Off-Roader? 1974 Jeep CJ-5 6×6

In the automotive engineering world, there’s a fundamental technical term called “roughly about right.” It is generally used to describe how many engines a vehicle will have or how many road wheels. However, it appears that the owner of this Jeep CJ-5 may have taken one look at the book containing these technical terms and thrown it out the nearest window. He has done an excellent job converting it from a four-wheel drive to a six-wheel drive. That should allow it to access areas never before imagined. The project is effectively complete, but the owner feels that now is the time to part with it. Located in Coudersport, Pennsylvania, you will find the Jeep listed for sale here on Craigslist. You can park this classic in your garage for $20,000. I have to say a big thank you to Barn Finder MikeP for spotting this quirky classic for us.

Finished in Mellow Yellow, this Jeep makes a stunning first impression. Your eyes are not deceiving you because it does feature six wheels. We’ll get to the engineering shortly, but it is worth noting that all of the body modifications involved in this upgrade are real steel. The owner indicates that there is no plastic or fiberglass anywhere in this conversion. The level of finish is impressive in that case, with no evidence of any joins where the builder has made his striking changes. The panels look remarkably straight for an off-roader of this vintage, while the paint shines nicely. The glass appears in good order, and for all-weather protection, this Jeep comes with a modified and extended steel hardtop, a half cap, and for those warmer days, a bikini top. The owner says that the half cap has seen better days while the hardtop and bikini top are in good order. It may be restorable, and this would be worth considering to increase this CJ-5’s already incredible versatility. It appears that there are no rust issues and that the vehicle is structurally sound. The frame has been carefully engineered and extended, ensuring that this car is structurally safe and sound. Overall, this Jeep shows plenty of promise for anybody who wants to get out and commune with nature in the great outdoors.

It isn’t clear which engine originally resided under the hood of this Jeep, but whichever one it was, the owner threw it out the window right behind the rulebook. The engine bay now houses a Chevrolet 350 small-block. That should provide considerably more torque and power than the factory unit and increase this classic’s ability to find its way into the wilderness. The owner says that the engine is in good health, but it currently runs rough. It may only take some minor tweaking and tuning to rectify this issue. Many people in the past have attempted to buck the trend when it comes to how many wheels a vehicle should have, and some have achieved more success than others. It seems that the owner of this Jeep has done okay because its 6×6 system will work correctly with some minor work. He indicates that the carrier bearing in the middle axle requires a rebuild, but with this work done, this will be a genuine 6×6 off-roader. He says that the vehicle runs and drives well, and the small-block allows it to scream down the road. We don’t get a clear look at the interior, but the brief glimpses the supplied photos allow suggest that all is well with that aspect of this beauty.

There’s no denying that this 1974 Jeep CJ-5 is a distinctive vehicle. You will struggle to ever find one similar or that is likely to gain the level of attention that this one will. Its operational six-wheel-drive configuration means that it will either allow the new owner to access areas never before imagined or to find themselves stranded in even more inaccessible areas than normally expected. It shows all the hallmarks of being nicely engineered and executed. It may not be an off-roader that appeals to all tastes, but I’m pretty sure that somebody will slap down their cash for this classic.
