Suzuki Grand Vitara Facelift with new 2.4L Engine: 32 High-Res Photos
Marking the celebrations for the 20 years of the Vitara and Grand Vitara models, Suzuki launched the facelifted version of its latest generation compact SUV in Europe this week. The 2009 Grand Vitara which is available in both three and five-door body styles, features subtle styling tweaks and most importantly, a new 2.4-litre petrol engine matted to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic transmission that replaces the 2.0-liter unit. -Continued
Both the exterior and interior of the 2009 Grand Vitara have been given a mild facelift that includes a slightly revised front end treatment with and new door mirrors with integrated turn indicators. Inside the cabin sports new chrome and wood-effect inlays, together with improvements to the design and operation of some of the dashboard controls, including a new multi-information display and revised air conditioning control panel.
The new flagship model in the European Grand Vitara range is equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine developed from the 140 HP 2.0-litre petrol unit that it replaces. In the 3-door model, the 2.4L engine delivers an output of 166 HP while in the five-door model, 169 HP. When matted to the standard five-speed manual gearbox, the three-door Grand Vitara 2.4 accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h (62mph) in 11.2 sec (5d: 11.7 sec) and goes on to a top speed of 180 km/h or 112 mph.
Though standard equipment differs from country to country, the Grand Vitara 2.4 will be offered in most markets with ESP, 17 (3d) or 18 (5d) inch alloy wheels, electrically-operated glass sun-roof (5d), in-dash 6CD player with MP3 compatibility, and leather seats (5d) as standard.
Suzuki Grand Vitara facelift introduced – RM121,100
Suzuki Malaysia Automobile (SMA) unveiled the refreshed Suzuki Grand Vitara this afternoon at Empire Subang. Introduced in Japan in July this year, this is actually the third version of the third-generation Suzuki Vitara. The Grand Vitara has been around in its present form since 2005, getting a mild facelift in 2008.
This latest refresh sports a more obvious facelift than the 2008 model, with a new front bumper and grille being the main clues. Looks more premium to these eyes, especially with the new Gaia Bronze Pearl Metallic colour and new design 17-inch wheels.
No changes to the rear, which continues to have the prominent spare wheel housing that’s almost extinct these days. Another unique Vitara feature is of course the sideways-opening rear hatch.
The Vitara’s front bumper under garnish is now made of SSPP (Suzuki Super Polypropylene), which the company claims is lighter and remains unpainted to make scratches less noticable.
Inside, the Grand Vitara’s tidily arranged cabin gets new seat fabric and door inserts.
No mechanical changes other than the inclusion of what Suzuki calls “brake override system”, which was also added to the facelifted SX4. It basically gives priority to the brake pedal when both it and the accelerator pedal are depressed at the same time. So, the car will stop in a “sticky gas pedal” situation.
Otherwise, the built-in ladder frame Grand Vitara is powered by the familiar J20A 2.0 litre engine with 138 horses (not 104 PS as stated in the brochure) and 183 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, paired to a four-speed automatic gearbox.
The Grand Vitara 2WD is rather unique in having a rear-wheel drive layout, as opposed to the usual FWD. Note that the engine is mounted longitudinally as well.
The Suzuki Grand Vitara, which is imported CBU from Japan, is priced at RM121,100 on-the-road with insurance. Live gallery from the event is after the jump.

2020 Suzuki Vitara Redesign
Here’s an interesting fact, Vitara model suffered only one redesign so far. Suzuki clearly doesn’t like to rush into drastic changes. The 2020 Suzuki Vitara won’t introduce any significant upgrades. Most of the changes are very minor and almost not visible. For the start, the front bumper is slightly revised.
Also, the hood will now feature a slightly different shape. On the other hand, wheels and LED headlights are intact. Besides the changes, Suzuki will keep the existing color palette. A beautiful choice of metallic paints is available once again. That includes colors such as Horizon Orange, Silky Silver, Cosmic Black Pearl, and Galactic Gray.

The same approach is continuing from the inside. The 2020 Suzuki Vitara won’t arrive with such a larger number of interior upgrades. The automaker will look to additionally modernize the cabin.
For that reason, most of the technology features will be updated. However, interior design and layout will remain. Suzuki will offer the same list of standard and optional features. On the other hand, new driver-assistance systems could be in the offer.
Engine Specs

Vitara’s optional engine is a 1.4-liter that can generate 140 HP and 162 lb-ft of twist. Both BoosterJet units are offering a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The diesel engine is not available, unfortunately. On the other hand, some specific markets could get a Vitara Diesel model. This is still just speculation, whatsoever.
2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara
Some rumors strongly suggested that Suzuki won’t offer a Grand Vitara model anymore. However, those rumors were clearly false. The 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara will become available once again. Just like its smaller sibling, Grand Vitara also won’t introduce any major changes.
You can’t find many differences between the Vitara and Grand Vitara models. Except for the size of course. While Vitara classifies as a compact SUV, Grand Vitara is a mid-size SUV. However, some speculations are suggesting a diesel engine inside the 2020 Grand Vitara. A speculated 1.4-liter diesel engine could arrive. This engine comes with a dual-clutch transmission and it delivers a better fuel economy figures.

Indian car market numero uno Maruti Suzuki has a wide ranging product portfolio and exhaustive service network that puts it in a league of its own.
