Jeep, crossover, SUV: the Russian auto industry and its cross-country vehicles
Now one of the most popular types of cars is an SUV. The Russian auto industry is known, so to speak, not for the most powerful and high-quality models. But cars, characterized by increased cross-country ability, are produced quite successfully on the territory of our country. And they boast good performance.
TagAZ Road Partner
Start a story about Russian-made jeeps with this model. For the first time, Road Partner left the assembly line of the Taganrog Automobile Plant in 2008. Modern versions are endowed with quite powerful characteristics.
Two petrol engines are offered — 3.2 and 2.3 liters. Power is 220 and 150 «horses», respectively. Potential buyers also have a choice — either a 4-speed «automatic» or a 5-speed «mechanics». This Russian SUV, of course, is all-wheel drive. It has a powerful frame structure, an independent torsion bar suspension is installed in front, and a spring suspension in the back.
As befits a realjeep, this Russian SUV boasts a solid ground clearance of 19.5 centimeters. He also has great dynamics. It accelerates to “hundreds” in 10.2 seconds. But this is with mechanics. If the automatic transmission is on, then the time will increase to 12.5 seconds.
There is also a minus. This is an expense. It is about 20 liters per 100 «urban» kilometers and 14 — on the highway. In the case of automatic transmission, consumption is reduced to 16 and 10 liters, respectively.
What about the cost? The price of this car starts from ~ 650,000 rubles. It varies depending on the selected engine and equipment.
New from UAZ
Ulyanovsk Automobile Building Plant not so long ago presented a modern SUV to the attention of the public. Russian jeep called «Patriot» — big, wide and brutal. Significantly improved compared to its predecessor. Everything about his appearance is attractive. Stylish radiator grille, mirrors and optics of an unusual, angular shape, stylish steps. The new «Patriot» is able to please not only connoisseurs of jeeps, but also people who prefer crossovers.
A model is offered with a 2.7-liter 128-horsepower gasoline engine, and a diesel unit that produces 114 «horses» with a volume of 2.2 liters. Of course, such engines do not allow the Patriot to accelerate quickly. Up to 100 km / h the speedometer needle gets only 20 seconds after the start of movement. And the maximum speed is 150 km / h. But inside it is very comfortable and spacious. The price of such a model is about a million rubles.
Lada 4×4 Urban
This is another recently launched SUV. The Russian auto industry is known throughout the world for its Lada models, they are known even abroad. And in 2014, the all-wheel drive car Urban was released. It was produced before (since 1975, to be more precise), but not so long ago, motorists saw an updated model.
Under the hood of this model is a 1.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 83 hp. With. It works in tandem with a 5-speed «mechanics». To 100 km/h this compact 3-door jeep accelerates in 17 seconds. And its maximum speed is 142 km / h. But her consumption is small (in comparison with the previously mentioned models) — about 12.3 liters of fuel in the city. And the price is nice. The new Russian SUV Urban can be purchased for 500-550 thousand rubles.
Largus Cross
Another recently released novelty from the AvtoVAZ concern. It’s not really an SUV. The Russian concern dubbed this model as a pseudo-crossover. And this is true — the Lada looks like a SUV, but it does not differ in increased cross-country ability, even if its clearance has been increased by 2.5 centimeters. But she is attractive. A nice body kit, improved bumpers, 16-inch alloy wheels, black door pillars — all this adds to her a certain originality.
By the way, the model has good equipment. Already in the basic version, she gets a leather braid on the steering wheel, an audio system with 4 speakers, an on-board computer, air conditioning, BAS, ABS, a spare wheel, full power accessories, fog lights and heated seats.
This machine is offered with only one engine. This is a 4-cylinder 1.6-liter 105-horsepower engine, paired with a 5-speed “mechanics”. The maximum speed of this pseudo-crossover is 165 km / h, and the novelty consumes about 11.5 liters of fuel per 100 «city» kilometers.
The price of «Lada» starts from 615,000 rubles for a 5-seat version and from 640,000 rubles. – for a station wagon that can accommodate seven people.
Tiger
This is the name of the Russian SUV, which is produced by the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant. Initially, it was a military armored car. But after some time, the Tiger jeep gained popularity among ordinary citizens. No wonder, because this is a very powerful and large machine.
A solid, brutal crossover that weighs 5 tons — that’s how you can describe this model. It is based on a solid spar frame. Under the hood, the jeep «Tiger» has a 215-horsepower 3.2-liter diesel unit, controlled by a 6-speed «mechanics».
This model has excellent visibility and just a huge ground clearance — 40 centimeters. Also, the jeep boasts a powerful stereo system with six speakers, an LCD display, adjustable seats, an anatomical steering wheel, air conditioning with a filter and many other options. And this car, capable of crossing fords a meter deep, costs about 100-120 thousand dollars.
UAZ Hunter
This SUV should be told in the end. Iconic models, known as 469 and 3151,replaced the UAZ «Hunter». The price of this car used to be not as much as it is now. But the fact is that in 2016 a new version was released. And it costs about 550-600 thousand rubles.
What can the UAZ «Hunter» boast of, the price of which is so pleasing to the eye? First, technical specifications. A model with a 2.7-liter 128-horsepower engine is offered, which works in tandem with a 5-speed «mechanics». Secondly, he has excellent cross-country ability. UAZ is able to overcome any obstacles, even fords, half a meter deep. Thirdly, it has excellent handling — disc brakes react almost instantly, and thanks to the hydraulic booster, the steering wheel obeys any movement. And besides, the car just pleases with its brutal appearance.

African country ready to make Russian SUVs
Companies in Ghana are interested in assembling Russian UAZ vehicles, RIA Novosti reported, citing the Chairman of the Ghana-Russia Business Development Council Lawrence Awuku-Boateng.
Negotiations are planned in Moscow within the next two months between companies from the West African country and Russia’s UAZ manufacturer Sollers, Awuku-Boateng told the media. If the sides come to an agreement, Russian off-road vehicles will be assembled in Ghana, he added.
Sollers is a Russian firm holding a controlling stake in the Ulyanovsk automobile plant (UAZ) and the owner of the UAZ brand. The automaker manufactures a range of Patriot SUVs, pick-up trucks, light commercial vehicles and vans. UAZ was founded in 1941 and is best known for the UAZ-469 utility vehicle, which has been widely used as a military vehicle around the world. The plant has been part of the Sollers automotive group since 2000. UAZ Patriot was the second best-selling car in Russia in 2022 with a market share of 16.8%, according to the company. The SUV was also available in the US under the Bremach brand.
Before Western countries launched their sanctions campaign against Russia over its military operation in Ukraine, Sollers assembled cars for manufacturers such as Ford and Mazda. Both suspended their joint ventures with the Russian company last year.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier that Russia’s largest car manufacturers, including UAZ and Kamaz, were interested in entering the Ghanaian market.
Ghana strives to become a regional hub for auto assembly in West Africa. The country’s government has been promoting foreign investment through its Automotive Development Policy, introduced in 2019. It also offers tax breaks of up to 10 years to auto makers that set up local manufacturing plants. Industry leaders such as Volkswagen, Peugeot, Toyota, and Nissan already assemble vehicles in Ghana, and a Kia assembly plant was commissioned last month.
The Central African Republic also expressed interest in assembling cars from the UAZ Patriot range in May of this year.

The 2022 Bremach 4×4 SUV is a Russian-made truck the company plans to sell at a starting price of $26,405, making it by far the cheapest vehicle of its kind.
Bremach originally planned to call it the Taos, but Volkswagen beat it to market with a model using that name. It’s set to compete against the dwindling number of body-on-frame midsize SUVs available today, which is limited to the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.
The Bremach is based on the Russian UAZ Patriot. (Bremach)
It’s not an all-new vehicle, but an updated and homologated version of the UAZ Patriot, which has been on sale since 2005. Bremach specializes in military and commercial trucks globally and plans to add the later to the U.S. lineup in the future.
Final specifications are still being worked out, but the plan is to offer it with a standard 4×4 system with a low range transfer case, a GM 6-speed automatic transmission and a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 150 hp, while a V8 option is in the works.
Bremach plans to add the Brio pickup to the lineup at a later date. (Bremach)
Bremach is currently taking reservations for the truck with a $100 deposit and is offering 5 year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 10 year/120,000-mile powertrain warranties to help buyers overcome any hesitancy.
The company is still in the process of establishing franchised dealer and service networks, but is aiming to begin deliveries sometime in 2022.
