The Safest SUVs for 2023

acura rdx iihs safety test side

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) made changes to its safety rating criteria for 2023 model-year vehicles. In order for a vehicle to earn a Top Safety Pick+, the organization’s highest honor, a vehicle must earn a Good rating in every crash test including the updated driver’s- and passenger’s-side small overlap front tests, the original moderate overlap front test, and the updated side test. Additionally, headlights must earn a Good or Acceptable rating and either a Superior or Advanced rating in both daytime testing and the new nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front-crash prevention test.

Active safety tech required for crash avoidance and mitigation tests includes forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Many of the Top Safety Pick+ winners also feature additional active safety tech.

With the stricter criteria, only 17 crossovers and SUVs received IIHS’s highest honors for 2023. Many were also given five-star crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Remember, active safety tech is designed to enhance driver safety awareness—not replace it.

Acura MDX

Marc Urbano | Car and Driver

The Acura MDX comes standard with the brand’s suite of active safety tech, dubbed AcuraWatch. AcuraWatch includes the likes of forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The three-row crossover earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, netting a Good rating in all the crash tests and Superior and Advanced ratings for crash avoidance and mitigation.

Acura RDX

Acura

The compact Acura RDX receives Good ratings in every crash test, as well as Superior and Advanced ratings for crash avoidance and mitigation. These high marks net this SUV a Top Safety Pick+ designation.

Honda CR-V

Michael Simari | Car and Driver

With a Good rating in every crash test and Superior and Advanced ratings for crash avoidance and mitigation, the 10Best-winning 2023 Honda CR-V earns a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. All CR-Vs come standard with automatic emergency braking systems, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Honda HR-V

2023 honda hrv

Michael Simari | Car and Driver

Honda’s subcompact HR-V may lack much in the way of driving enthusiasm, but it is mighty safe. The 2023 HR-V scores a Good rating in every crash test, as well as a Superior rating for crash avoidance and mitigation, netting it a Top SafetyPick+ award from IIHS. The HR-V’s headlights, however, receive a mere Acceptable rating. All HR-Vs come standard with Honda’s suite of active safety tech, which includes the likes of automatic emergency braking systems, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Hyundai Palisade

Hyundai

Hyundai’s three-row Palisade earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS. The Palisade earns a Good rating in most of the crash tests and Superior ratings in crash avoidance and mitigation testing. Unfortunately, the Palisade received a Poor rating in IIHS’s updated moderate overlap front crash test. Hyundai’s cheekily named SmartSense suite of safety features comes standard and it includes lane-keeping assist, lane-centering, blind-spot monitoring, and more.

Infiniti QX60

INFINITI

The Infiniti QX60 may not be our favorite mid-size luxury SUV, but it is one of the safest options in the segment. The six-cylinder SUV earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS thanks to its Good ratings in every crash test, as well as Superior ratings in crash avoidance and mitigation. Infiniti equips its three-row crossover with a slew of standard active safety tech, including front and rear automatic emergency-braking systems, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning.

Kia Telluride

Kia

Last year’s Kia Telluride didn’t make the cut for an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ because of its standard halogen headlights. This is remedied for the 2023 model year. Credit the facelifted Telluride’s standard LED headlights. Additionally, this 10Best-winning SUV nets a Good rating in every crash test and a Superior rating in crash avoidance and mitigation.

Lexus NX

Andi Hedrick | Car and Driver

The redesigned Lexus NX offers more powertrain combinations relative to its predecessor. Buyers have four different options to choose from, including a new plug-in hybrid. Regardless of what powers your NX, every variant of this Lexus SUV earns Good ratings in all of IIHS’s crash tests and Superior ratings in every crash avoidance and mitigation test.

Lexus RX

Lexus

Redesigned for the 2023 model year, Lexus’s most popular model, the RX mid-size SUV, scores a Good rating in every crash test and a Superior rating in crash prevention and mitigation tests, earning it the IIHS’s top honors.

Lexus UX

2023 lexus ux250h

Lexus

Lexus’s entry-level SUV goes gasoline-electric for 2023. With 181 horsepower, the Lexus UX250h isn’t exactly the quickest subcompact luxury SUV out there, but it is one of the safest, with IIHS awarding it a Top Safety Pick+ designation. The Lexus hybrid scores Good ratings in all IIHS crash tests and a Superior rating for crash avoidance and mitigation.

Nissan Pathfinder

2023 nissan pathfinder rock creek

Car and Driver

The unibody 2023 Nissan Pathfinder is a far cry from the body-on-frame original—even when fitted with the tougher Rock Creek kit. Though the latest Pathfinder may lack the off-road chops of its forebears, it’s at least a far safer machine, with IIHS awarding the Nissan its highest Top Safety Pick+. The mid-size Nissan SUV nets top ratings in just about every category, save for its headlights, which IIHS rates merely as Acceptable.

Subaru Ascent

2024 subaru ascent

Subaru

The Subaru Ascent earns IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ award for the third year in a row. The three-row crossover manages Good ratings in every crash test and for its headlights, as well as Superior ratings in crash avoidance and mitigation tests.

Subaru Solterra

2023 subaru solterra

Subaru

Subaru’s first foray into the battery-electric SUV segment manages to snag a Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS. The all-wheel-drive EV’s EPA-estimated maximum driving range of 228 miles may not allow the Solterra to go very far on a full charge, but wherever it goes, this Subie SUV is sure to keep those within it safe.

Tesla Model Y

Marc Urbano | Car and Driver

If you want a safe electric SUV with more than 300 miles of range, then the Tesla Model Y is the vehicle for you. The Top Safety Pick+ winner is capable of traveling an EPA-estimated 330 miles on a full charge in Long Range form. This figure falls to 279 miles in base guise and 303 miles in the high-powered Performance trim. Only the Performance’s headlights net a Good rating, though. The headlights of the Model Y Long Range are merely Acceptable, per IIHS.

Toyota Highlander

2023 toyota highlander

Toyota

Whether you opt for the Toyota Highlander’s 265-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder or 243-hp hybrid powertrain, you can feel content knowing this three-row mid-size SUV is a safe automotive option. Literally. As a Top Safety Pick+ winner, the Highlander earns a Superior rating by IIHS for front crash prevention and Good ratings in most crash tests. Alas, the Highlander fails to achieve top marks in IIHS’s updated moderate overlap front test, receiving a less-than-stellar Marginal rating. Likewise, only the top-line Platinum trim’s headlights earn a Good rating. The headlights of all other Highlander trims receive an Acceptable rating by IIHS.

Volkswagen ID.4

2023 vw id4 driving

Volkswagen

Volkswagen may have cut the price of its ID.4 electric SUV for 2023—credit the arrival of the new Standard trim and its smaller battery pack—but the German brand didn’t cut back on safety, with the model netting a Top Safety Pick+ award. Like the Subaru Solterra, which is also on this list, driving range isn’t exactly the ID.4’s forte, with the entry-level model netting an EPA-estimated range of 209 miles. Opt for a rear-drive ID.4 with the bigger battery pack, and that figure jumps up to as high as 275 miles. Adding all-wheel drive, meanwhile, gives the ID.4 additional power, courtesy of a second electric motor, but comes at a cost to the SUV’s overall driving range.

Volvo XC90

VIEW PHOTOS Marc Urbano | Car and Driver

As expected of a vehicle bearing the Volvo badge, the XC90 offers copious standard safety features. No surprise, then, that both the strictly gas-powered XC90 and the plug-in XC90 Recharge nab IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ award. Though the XC90’s infotainment system is a sore point, the rest of this SUV is hard to fault. Sure, we wish the XC90 was a little bit more engaging from the driver’s seat, but if you’re willing to sacrifice some behind-the-wheel enjoyment, then the XC90’s cushy seats, spacious insides, and Scandinavian design ought to whet your appetite for a stylish—and safe—three-row mid-size luxury SUV.
