Even before it unveiled the plug-in hybrid Wrangler, Jeep was already planning on going electric. Naturally, we assumed the first electric Jeep would be a car or SUV. However, modern mobility doesn’t only involve cars. And, as Fox has proven with its shocks, automotive off-road tech also works with other forms of transportation.

Although electric scooters have proven something of a dud, bicycles are a popular car-alternative. Especially electric bikes, or ‘e-bikes’, which can keep up with traffic in the city, or in the snow. Which is why the first electric Jeep is an electric mountain bike.

The electric Jeep…bike?

The bike is being made by a company in Colorado called QuietKat, which makes a variety of other electric mountain bikes. The electric Jeep bike is based on QuietKat’s existing aluminum-frame RidgerRunner, which is a full-suspension, fat-tire mountain bike. Like the RidgeRunner, the Jeep e-bike has 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes, but the drivetrain’s been upgraded from a 9-speed to a 10-speed.

Ducati MIG-RR

Like Jeep, Ducati partnered with an existing e-bike company, in this case, Italian firm Thok. Motorcyclist reports Thok was actually co-founded by Livio Suppo, a former Honda MotoGP boss, and Stefano Migliori, a several-time world-champion bike racer. The RR is based on Thok’s existing MIG.

Like Jeep’s e-bike, the MIG-RR has an aluminum frame, full suspension, and hydraulic disc brakes. However, Ducati’s e-bike is pedal-assist-only, although riders can shift between multiple levels of assist on the fly. And while the Jeep e-bike is designed to go even where no trail exists, the MIG-RR is a speedy enduro, meant for quickly carving up and downhill trails. That’s why the Ducati e-bike’s tires are narrower.

Ducati MIG-RR shock detail

Due to the MIG-RR’s intended goal, its 250W motor and 504-Wh battery are smaller than the Jeep e-bike’s, according to Cycle World. But, in the lowest assist mode, Eco, the range is larger, at 62 miles.

Should you get one?

E-bikes are significantly more expensive than similar non-electric bikes, and both Jeep’s and Ducati’s e-bikes are no different.

The Jeep e-bike will go on sale in June 2020, with a $6,299 MSRP. That price will likely be higher for customers, as the bike is also compatible with a wide range of optional racks, lights, bags, and other accessories. As of this writing, the MIG-RR has only started becoming available at select Ducati dealers. In Europe, however, it retails for about $6,970.

It’s confirmed the Jeep Wrangler will be going all-electric. The new breed of Jeep Wranglers will be purely electric-powered with unrivaled off-road capabilities, even compared to the current generation.

According to Jeep’s CEO, Christian Meunier, electric power will improve the Wrangler’s capabilities. Speaking with Auto Express, Meunier said:

The great thing about electrification is that it makes a Jeep more capable. It gives us more torque; it makes it smoother and more precise.

Furthermore, he explains, “The architecture around it, the suspension system, the axle you’re going to use, can be anything – a solid axle or independent suspension.”

Although Jeep has teased the idea of an all-electric Wrangler, up until now, it has said nothing about the electric vehicle.

Last year, Jeep revealed it would launch several new fully electric models, including the Avenger, Recon, and Wagoneer S, over the next few years.

The Recon, which the automaker says is “inspired by the spirit of the legendary Jeep Wrangler,” is expected to roll out in the US next year. However, from early images that emerged from a dealer meeting, the Recon looks more like a Renegade than a Wrangler.

Meunier explains the next-generation Wrangler EV’s off-road abilities measured through its famous Trail Rating scale.

Jeep models earn a “Trail Rating” based on a scale of 1 to 10, with the higher the rating, the more vehicle capabilities. Meunier said:

The Trail Rating is a scale up to 10. At 10 is the two-door Wrangler Rubicon – the five-door Wrangler Rubicon is at nine. We start at four for the Renegade with Trail Rating.

Meanwhile, Jeep looks to push the scale further with future EVs, like the all-electric Wrangler, as Menuier claimed:

With the next-generation Wrangler we want to push the Trail Rating to 12. Electrification doesn’t prevent us from doing anything when it comes to off-roading.

The great thing about electrification is that it makes a Jeep more capable. It gives us more torque; it makes it smoother and more precise.

The new Jeep Wrangler EV is expected to ride on parent company Stellantis’s STLA large dedicated EV platform, the same used for the upcoming Ram 1500 REV electric pickup and Jeep Recon.

With several electric model launches coming up, the all-electric Wrangler isn’t expected to be released anytime soon. Currently, it looks like the Wrangler EV will be launched in 2027 at the earliest.

While it can be tempting to get something a child can grow into, there are safety risks involved with choosing one that’s too large or powerful for your child to control easily. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for age and weight. Some cars offer multiple speeds, parental remote controls, and seat belts.

Types of Ride-On Electric Cars: Kids’ ride-ons come in four main types: Side-by-side cars, or SxS, have two parallel seats. ATV ride-ons have the rider straddling a center seat with a foot on either side. UTV are single-seat, upright-seating variants of side-by-sides. Motorcycles are what you’d expect; toddler-oriented motorcycles usually have training wheels to keep the machine upright.
