How rugged is the Toyota Highlander?
Toyota is recognized for making long-lasting vehicles, and the Highlander is no exception. Even after covering 300K miles on their cars, many owners haven’t needed substantial repairs like an engine or transmission rebuild.
You must service your car at the proper intervals to reach this level. Older vehicles using conventional oil need to have their oil changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, whereas newer models using synthetic oil only need to change their oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles or so. You should bring your car in for a tune-up every 12 to 18 months.
Toyota Highlander’s Maintenance Schedule
The Toyota Highlander’s maintenance plan is rather extensive, and you should follow it to avoid any issues with the car. As long as you follow up with the maintenance, your vehicle will last longer.
So you need to check all fluid levels, oil and filter replacement, tire rotation, brake lining/drum, and brake pad/disc inspection should be performed every 5,000 miles or six months. You should examine the ball joints, coolant, and transfer case oil every 15,000 miles or 18 months, whichever arrives first. The cabin and engine air filters should be replaced every 30,000 miles or 36 months.
FAQ – Toyota Highlander Maintenance Requires
Depending on the powertrain, the Toyota Highlander has gone through numerous variants. Timing chains and belts may be included in your vehicle’s standard equipment. The four-cylinder SUV’s timing chain was standard equipment from 2001 to 2007. The V6 model had a timing belt, but in 2008, the manufacturer changed all of the Highlander’s engine choices to a timing chain.
The engine must be lubricated using SAE 0W-20 oil. Mobil 1, Valvoline Advanced, Castrol Edge, Royal Purple, Pennzoil Platinum, and Quaker State are all excellent choices if you’re doing it yourself.
To keep engine components cooled and lubricated, engine oil is essential. The 4-cylinder engine (1AR-FE) in the Toyota Highlander requires 4.6 quarts. In comparison, the V6 engine (2GR-FKS) requires 5.8 quarts of oil.
So there you go. I hope you enjoyed this content, and if you find it helpful please share by having way more coming your way soon. Thanks for reading, and have a great day.

All right, so let’s say that you get in your car and your maintenance light was on. You just go to take off from the dealership, and they forgot to shut it off. I’m not saying it should happen, just saying that it does. Now you need to do a manual reset. So let me show you guys real quick how to reset this up.

FAQ – Toyota Highlander Maintenance Required
The V6 engine in the 2019 Toyota Highlander is designed to hold synthetic oil with a viscosity rating of 0W-20. Ensure the automobile has been parked and turned off for at least two hours before you begin an oil change. If you don’t, the oil in your car will be scalding, and you risk being burned.
In the Highlander, Toyota advises replacing this oil every 7,500 miles. Towing or off-roading, for example, may need a more regular maintenance frequency.
OBD II port may be found beneath the driver-side dash, just to the left of your steering column. You’ll have to remove a little plastic cap to get to the plug.
The cost of an oil change in the Highlander ranges from $130 to $170, depending on the oil choice. Approximately $30 to $50 of this amount is spent on labor.
By the way, this procedure probably works for the fourth generation of the Toyota Highlander (2019, 2020, and 2021 model years). If you have a car and this works with your Toyota or Lexus, please let us know we’re all interested. I have other Toyota and other cool content tutorials coming out, so please let me hear your comments. Have a great day, bye.

Toyota Highlander: Maint Reqd Light Meaning
The Toyota Highlander’s maint reqd light indicates a service interval has been met. These intervals happen at mileage or time intervals (typically every 5000 miles/6 months). The maintenance required light is standard in all newer Toyota vehicles, and helps insure long life and dependability by making sure factory maintenance intervals are met.
Toyota Highlander: Maintenance Required Light Meaning
The maint reqd light means that Toyota recommends servicing your Highlander soon. Depending on what the vehicle mileage is when the light came on, it could mean that any of the following maintenance is needed:
- Engine oil change
- Fluid check
- Tire Rotation
- Multi-point inspection
- Wiper inspection/and or replacement
- Replace cabin air filter
- Inspect steering system
Here is a full detailed list of the recommended mileage and service straight from Toyota. This is a generic list. It’s always a good idea to get one printed from the dealer for your exact model year Highlander if you are planning on taking the maintenance on yourself.
Toyota Highlander Maint Reqd Light
Nearly every make and model year of Toyota vehicle has the same process to reset the maintenance required light.
- Turn the key to the on position with the odometer showing.
- Press and hold the odometer button.
- Turn the key to the off position while still holding the odometer button.
- Without releasing the odometer button, turn the key to the run position.
- Wait a few seconds for the light to turn off.
If this process did not work for you, a select amount of Toyota vehicles need the odometer to be on trip A instead of the main odometer.
Here’s a terrific video from ChrisFix on resetting the light. Watching is sometimes easier than reading.
Highlander Maint Reqd Light Common Questions
Here are some of the most common questions regarding the Highlander’s maintenance required light:
Is Maintenance Required the Same as Check Engine?
No, the maintenance required light is different than the check engine light. The check engine light is there to let you know that there is a known problem. If you hook a code scanner to the OBD2 port, you will get a trouble code that lets you know which sensor has sent triggered the check engine light.
With the maint reqd light, there is no trouble code. It is letting you know that Toyota is recommending that the vehicle come in for maintenance and inspection to keep from having problems.
Can I Drive with the Maintenance Required Light On?
You most certainly can drive your Highlander with the maint reqd light on. Typically, it comes on in at 4500 miles for a 5000 mile service. It will eventually flash at you when you are getting closer to the 5000 miles side so that you’ll go in and have it serviced. You still need to have the maintenance done in a timely fashion though.
Summary/Conclusion: Toyota Highlander Maint Reqd Light
- The maintenance required light is different than the check engine light. It is letting you know Toyota is suggesting it come in at that time.
- You can reset this light yourself.
The maint reqd light is nothing to worry about. Just have your Toyota Highlander brought in and maintained. Or ask your dealer for a print out of the exact schedule for your model year if you are the DIY type. If there is anything that you would like to add, please feel free to leave a comment. Good luck!
