2023 Land Rover Discovery Interior and Cargo

Land Rover Discovery

The Disco has a classy and well-built cabin. All occupants will find seating to be comfortable and spacious save for those confined to the cramped third row, which is best left for children only. For the driver, there’s a large, crisp touchscreen providing access to key connectivity features, plus amenities like keyless entry, a garage-door opener, and a powered tailgate that make the SUV easier to live with. Other standard features include a power-adjustable steering column, three-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a 3D surround-view camera. The cabin can be jazzed up with plush leather upholstery and a variety of wood trim finishes. The Germans may have a slight edge in terms of quality but the Discovery easily lives up to its luxury SUV billing.

Seating and Interior Space

The Discovery seats a maximum of seven occupants in three rows. In the first two rows, adults will be comfortable thanks to ample legroom and headroom. Access is also straightforward due to the large doors. Getting into the 3rd row requires a bit of unnecessary dexterity because the second row is not easy to move, but once seated, it’s not as spacious as the second row. Shorter adults will be able to ride back there for shorter distances, but six-footers are best accommodated in one of the first two rows.

There are no serious problems with outward visibility, although the rear headrests are quite large and can hamper the driver’s view out of the back window.

Interior Colors and Materials

The Discovery gets grained leather or no-cost Luxtec leatherette upholstery as standard in a choice of Ebony and Light Oyster color schemes. Windsor leather in Ebony only is a $750 option, but also requires the $2,450 ventilated and 20-way power seats, for a total outlay of $3,200. Light Oyster or Ebony headliners are available, while the trim options include Gloss Black, Titanium Mesh ($300), Shadow Aluminum ($300), Natural Charcoal Oak veneer ($600), and Natural Shadow Oak veneer ($600).

R-Dynamic models receive Light Oyster/Ebony two-tone grained leather upholstery as standard, with one-color Ebony also available, as well as metal treadplates with R-Dynamic branding and standard Shadow Aluminum trim. The S trim’s Windsor leather option applies here as well at the same cost, but in terms of trim, the two wood-veneer options cost only $300 here, while the Titanium Mesh becomes a no-cost option.

The R-Dynamic HSE and Metropolitan Edition (only available with the bigger engine) get the Windsor leather seats as standard, with Caraway (a light tan) added as an additional color option for the seats. Only the top two trims can be equipped with full extended leather for an additional $1,500, although this option does require also specifying the $300 solar attenuating windshield.

2023 Discovery Trunk and Cargo Space

As is often the case with seven-seater SUVs, cargo capacity is poor when all the seats are upright. Behind the third row, there are just 9.1 cubic feet. With the third row folded, cargo space increases to a much more practical 45 cubes. The 60/40 split-folding rear seat has an electric fold function and by dropping these, the Discovery offers 74.3 cubes.

Interior storage space is excellent, too. The midsize SUV comes with in-facia storage above the usual glovebox, lidded storage in the center console, large door bins in the first two rows, and cupholders for front and rear occupants.

2023 Discovery Infotainment and Features

Features

Land Rover has been generous with the Discovery’s standard specification in the US market. Even the entry-level model comes with heated and 14-way power-adjustable front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, three-zone automatic climate control, power-folding mirrors, a sliding front sunroof, a fixed rear panoramic roof, a wireless charging pad, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The driver gets an interactive digital display, push-button start, keyless entry, and a garage-door opener. Later in the model year, all trims get the digital gauge cluster currently only fitted to the HSE and up as standard equipment.

All of the expected driver-assistance features are standard such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot assist, a 3D surround-view camera system, and front/rear parking sensors. The R-Dynamic HSE boasts electric third-row seats and 20-way power-adjustable front seats with ventilation, but loses its gesture-controlled power liftgate, which is now standard on the new flagship, the Metropolitan Edition only, along with heated second- and third-row seats, a heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control, and a head-up display.

Land Rover’s options list includes both standalone upgrades and packages. Ticking a few boxes can add features like four-zone climate control and a heated steering wheel on trims that don’t have them.

Infotainment

Land Rover’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment interface is a huge improvement over what was used in older models. Even people unfamiliar with Land Rover products should quickly be able to get used to the responsive touchscreen, which measures 11.4 inches. The base model comes with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, so users of each won’t feel alienated when needing to connect their smartphones. Bluetooth, HD Radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio are all also standard. Navigation with real-time traffic information allows for convenient trips when heading to an unknown destination, or if you want to avoid congestion. The standard sound system is upgraded from last year’s eight-speaker setup to a 12-speaker Meridian system. On the HSE and Metropolitan Edition, a more powerful Meridian sound system with 14 speakers and a dual-channel subwoofer is equipped.

Lower-spec models can upgrade from the 12-speaker to the 14-speaker Meridian system at a cost of $750. The Wi-Fi-enabled infotainment system can be ordered with a $400 data plan.

Land Rover Discovery boot space, practicality and safety

Land Rover Discovery boot with two front seats in place

The Discovery is an enormous seven-seat car, and as expected, is brilliant for everyday family life.

Up front there’s plenty of space. Row two offers three seats suitable for adults, and the final two pews are also suitable for grown ups. Only the BMW X7 beats it in this class in terms of third-row space.

The seating positions are lofty, but the front seats are relatively low set in relation to the side windows to increase headroom.

Land Rover claims there’s 45 litres of storage room alone up front. This includes a deep centre console and a hidden area behind the ventilation controls.

Boot space and storage

The boot is as impressively massive as the rest of the car. In standard five-seat mode there’s 1,137 litres of space in the rear, which shrinks to 258 litres with all seven seats up. With only the front two seats erect, it’s truly van-like with 2,406 litres on offer.

If you want to make full use of the huge boot, you’ll have to drop at least the third row of seats. Luckily, the Intelligent Seat Fold system allows the five rear seats to be individually folded or raised from the central touch screen, buttons on the seats themselves or in the boot and also via a dedicated mobile phone app.

The system can fold all the seats in 14 seconds when operated correctly, but it takes a little practice to navigate the menus and ensure the safety measures aren’t triggered which halts the electric mechanisms.

Is it easy to park?

Without parking aids, this would be a tough car to tuck into a typical UK-sized bay. Visibility isn’t great, and your view of the corners is pretty much non-existent. There’s also no disguising its sheer size. At least there are large door mirrors to aid rearward visibility when manoeuvring.

There are some interesting things to help you, not least the ClearSight rear-view mirror – you can see what’s behind regardless of whether the back seats are occupied or not, while a profusion of cameras and all-round parking sensors help create a 3D view displayed in the centre screen when reversing.

Safety

  • Plenty of safety kit included as standard
  • A full five-star rating in the Euro NCAP test
  • Cutting-edge driver-assistance tech available

The Land Rover Discovery has a full suite of safety kit fitted as standard, and scored a Euro NCAP crash-test rating of five stars when tested in 2017. Bear in mind that the test has become tougher since then.

Standard equipment includes front passenger and third row Isofix, Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition with Intelligent Speed Limiter, Blind Spot Monitoring and Reverse Traffic Detection Blind Spot Assist
