About the Discovery
The Discovery series first made its debut in 1989 and has remained a staple of the Land Rover lineup to this day.
Since its first release, there have only been three generations to hit the markets. Despite this, each generation has had multiple series, consisting of the Discovery Series I, Series II, 3, and 4. The latest version, which was released in 2017, interestingly does not have a number in the suffix.
Competing in the highly competitive mid-size luxury SUV class puts the model up against the likes of the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
To provide sufficient off-road capabilities and performance on the road, most versions have been outfitted with supercharged or turbocharged powertrains. This is one of the most common shortcomings for the model, represented by fault code P0299.
This code indicates an underboost condition from the forced induction system. For turbocharged versions, one of the most common causes for this is a faulty turbocharger or wastegate actuator.
Depending on the model in question, owners have fairly commonly reported problems with the turbocharger itself, which can be an expensive fix.
Owing to being fitted with relatively defective forced induction systems, fault code P0234 is another fairly common issue for the model. This code represents an overboost condition. This is often caused by a defective wastegate actuator.
Both of these codes are fairly serious problems that should be addressed quickly by Discovery owners.
Another issue that the model reportedly suffers from is P006A, which it shares with the Land Rover Freelander. This code indicates that the signal coming from the mass airflow (MAF) sensor or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) does not match what the powertrain control module (PCM) is expecting.
Owners have typically found success in replacing the sensors related to this issue.
