2020 Land Rover Defender Gets A Rugged Roof Tent
Outdoor enthusiasts will love this new Land Rover Defender accessory.
After a long hiatus, deliveries for the 2020 Land Rover Defender have finally begun in the US. Or at least it has for some customers, as demand for the reborn off-roader is far outreaching supply right now. Those who have been lucky enough to secure an order can now equip their 2020 Land Rover Defender with a unique comfort travel accessory.
To cater for outdoor adventure enthusiasts, Land Rover has teamed up with Autohome to develop a rugged roof tent for the new Land Rover Defender 110, allowing occupants to enjoy short overnight camping trips or lengthy overland expeditions in comfort. Land Rover claims the new tent is «as tough and capable as the vehicle it was created for.»

When not in use, the bespoke roof tent is protected in a lightweight fiberglass shell, allowing it to be erected singlehandedly in seconds by unclipping the fastening at the rear and lifting the shell slightly. The integral gas struts then take over and fully open the carbon grey fabric sides.
Inside the tent, two adults can sleep on a full-size cotton mattress. It also comes with pillows, an interior LED light and a stowage net and can be easily accessed from either side of the vehicle. An extendable aluminum access ladder can also be stored in the stowage bag inside the tent when not in use.

When erected, the tent measures 90.5 inches long, 51.2 inches wide and 59 inches high. On the move, the tent is stowed flat to retain the Defender’s stability and aerodynamic efficiency. «The New Land Rover Defender is the ideal vehicle to reach remote destinations comfortably both on and off-road. This roof tent will enable Defender drivers to continue their adventure above and beyond their journey; it’s perfect for the modern-day explorer,» said Joe Sinclair, Land Rover Director of Branded Goods and Licencing.
Available to buy at Land Rover retailers or Autohome’s website, the 2020 Land Rover roof tent is priced at €3,081.96 ($3,454.32). The new roof tent is one of 170 individual accessories available for the 2020 Land Rover Defender and requires the Land Rover Expedition Roof Rack and Roof Rails that come fitted as standard with the Adventure Pack.

The Land Rover Defender 110 Roof Tent has finally made camping cool
If you are lucky enough to own a new Defender, you’ll probably want to live in it or maybe, well, on top of it. and now you can. The big wigs at Land Rover have teamed up with Italian based adventure-gear specialist Autohome to create a roof tent that’s just as comfortable when you are outside as the driving seat is on the inside.
Before we get to the all-important tent talk, let’s delve into the Defender. I had a long drive from the sunny Kent coast up to Land Rover’s Yorkshire HQ to get fully accustomed to its domineering nature.
In all honesty, the only word to describe this machine is: tank. Or maybe two words: luxury tank. Its road presence and driving position are like nothing else. It makes you feel like a king whether you’re wafting up the M1 or parading through the Yorkshire Dales.
My luxury tank was the D300, with its punchy straight-six and 296bhp. Up until the V8 was released earlier this year, the D300 had been the most powerful diesel engine within the Defender. Still, it’s certainly no slouch, 0-60mph in seven seconds in a car this size feels pretty surreal.
We took it off-road with the Land Rover experience team and it was just as impressive. The car’s tech makes it feel like a routine drive to your local Sainsbury’s petrol station (when they have fuel). The heads-up display shows wheel positioning and balance, making it a breeze to get through deep waters, down rocky heights or when navigating the most difficult terrain.
It actually looks just as good as it performs, which is obviously saying something. Land Rover has really nailed this one. It’s the perfect combination of Defender ruggedness and Range Rover luxe that we all know and love. Even putting it into one of its many off-road settings is a doddle. Couple this with its new hotel (roof-tent) option, and you are ready for any oncoming doomsday or apocalypse scenario you can think of.
The tent itself is seriously impressive and is housed within a stylish, lightweight fibreglass shell, which is aerodynamically designed to not create a drag on the Defender and reduce the 4×4’s fuel efficiency (handy on the motorway).
The Defender’s hotel can be erected single-handedly, within seconds, by unclipping the rear fastening and allowing the internal gas struts to release the tent. When erected, it measures 2.3 metres long, 1.3 metres wide and 1.5 metres high, giving you ample space. The tent sleeps two adults on a full-size luxury cotton mattress and comes with pillows, an interior LED light and a stowage net, meaning all you need is a comfy sleeping bag to complete the set up.
Access to the tent can be from either side of the car, via its lightweight aluminium ladder, which can be stored easily. Now, all of this doesn’t come cheap, with prices starting at around £45,000 for the 110 Defender – couple that with the £2,500 for the roof tent and you’ve got a large bill. But is it worth it? The answer is a colossal yes. If you can afford it, it’s worth every penny.
The new Defender lets you go anywhere – “Above and Beyond” to the most remote, staggering, off-road locations that no other car will. And now you can set up camp and spend the night there.
I now refuse to go camping unless it’s on top of a 110 Defender.
2020 Land Rover Defender 110 gets an official rooftop tent
The new Land Rover Defender is officially here. It’s on sale and ready for pretty much any kind of an adventure you want to throw its way. But what’s an adventure without a rooftop tent? We kid, but bringing your bed along for the ride on top of your car has its benefits. That’s why Land Rover and Autohome have developed a bespoke rooftop tent together for the new Defender.
This tent was designed specifically for this model, and it even has Land Rover badging on it. A lightweight fiberglass shell protects it on the outside, and opening it looks easy. Land Rover says there’s one fastening at the rear, and once that’s undone, a light pull upwards is enough for the gas struts to take over and fully open up. It’s rated for two adults on top, so the kids in these photos must be stuck on the ground or in the cargo area.
Those who are sleeping up top will find a full-size “luxury cotton mattress” and pillows. There’s also an interior LED light and a stowage net. You can get in and out of the tent from either side of the vehicle — the whole kit comes with an aluminum access ladder that’s designed for the climb up, and it can be stowed in the aforementioned stowage net inside the tent. When fully opened, the tent measures 7.5 feet long, 4.3 feet wide and 4.9 feet high. Of course, it fully closes into an aerodynamic shape atop the vehicle when it’s not needed.
To mount the tent, you’ll need the official Land Rover Expedition Roof Rack and Roof Rails option, and it’ll need to be a Defender 110 — no news on the Defender 90 right now. The tent costs €3,082, which equals $3,468 when converted. Availability hasn’t been announced for the U.S. quite yet, but we imagine American buyers will be able to get their hands on this tent soon.
