Jeep Wrangler Africa Concept: Built to Safari

Jeep showed off plenty of wild and wonderful concepts at its annual unveiling of dream concepts ahead of the Jeep Easter Safari at Moab. And while many of them were rad in the way your ten-year-old self admired in Hot Wheels cars, the Africa concept is the one we grown-ups find most desirable.

That’s probably because, of all the Easter Safari concepts on show this year, the Wrangler Africa has the best mix of practical function and show-car uniqueness. Starting from a standard four-door Wrangler Unlimited, the Desert Tan concept truck grew a foot longer than the production rig on which it’s based, all of it aft of the rear wheel opening. Overall length is roughly the same as a Wrangler Unlimited with a tailgate-mounted spare tire, but now it’s actually part of the body. The Africa’s roof rises to four inches higher than the standard Wrangler at its highest point over the cargo area, which in conjunction with the added length creates a trunk that you could actually use to haul stuff. The interior bodywork wears white spray-in truck bedliner, while the spare tire now hides underneath the body.

The concept rides on suitably beefy 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires mounted to phenomenal 17-inch steel wheels, all of which fits under the stock fender flares courtesy a two-inch Jeep Performance Parts suspension lift with Fox Racing shocks. Dana 44 axles front and rear handle the added stress of the oversize rolling stock, as well as the torque that will be applied to them by the Africa’s diesel engine.

Yes: Jeep saw fit to stick a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine under the Africa’s hood, mated to a five-speed automatic. Lightweight and torquey, in our view it’s the ideal motivator for an adventure-ready wagon like this. With that oil-burning oomph, the front-bumper-mounted winch, and those auxiliary fuel tanks lashed to the front fenders, you could adventure deep into the wilderness in this beast.

Okay, so some of the features here are probably a bit outlandish. Jeep wouldn’t likely sell a production vehicle with guide wires running from the hood to the roof to push low-hanging brush out of the way, and the no-longer-removable roof on the Africa concept is perhaps a bridge too far for Drive-Topless Wrangler fans. But if Jeep promised to build one concept from this year’s batch and asked us to pick, this is the one we’d choose.
