2017 Jeep Renegade

The Renegade was designed for buyers who want an elevated seating position but don’t want to commit to a large SUV. It successfully blends carlike driving characteristics with SUV-like approaches to utility and packaging. It’s a good option for customers who like the idea of the brawny Wrangler but don’t want to dive so deeply into Jeep territory. Still, the Renegade brings some traditional Jeep attributes to the subcompact-crossover segment: it has a distinctly rugged air about it and a fair amount of off-road capability to back it up but with more refinement and comfort than you can get in a Wrangler.

What’s New for 2017?

Little has changed on the Renegade for the 2017 model year. Keyless Go, Jeep’s name for push-button start, is now standard on all trims. The Limited trim adds passive entry with remote start as a standard feature, and HID headlights and automatic high-beam headlights were added to the list of available options.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

It’s a good thing Jeep owners enjoy raw experiences, because there is no polish to either of the Renegade’s two four-cylinder engines. The Renegade can be equipped with either a base 160-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter inline four or a 180-hp 2.4-liter inline four. The turbocharged engine is only available with a six-speed manual, but the bigger engine comes with a nine-speed automatic. Unfortunately, when paired with most trims and all-wheel drive, neither engine moves the Renegade with dispatch. If you want a Renegade with something approaching real energy, you’ll have to settle for the low-end Sport model equipped with the 1.4-liter and six-speed manual gearbox. It’s the lightest and quickest. If an engaging driving experience is an important factor, the Kia Soul and the Mazda CX-3 both offer better performance and much more fun. While the Renegade can feel stiffly sprung in its most off-road-oriented Trailhawk and Deserthawk versions, the ride in other trims is generally composed and comfortable.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Renegade’s interior design may be a bit kitschy, with odd shapes and small design surprises, such as maps imprinted into cupholders and the phrase «Since 1941» stamped into the dash plastic. But its layout is basic and straightforward. Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, although there’s a lack of places to put personal items and cellphones. The grab bar in front of the passenger seat is a nice tribute to the Wrangler, as are the miniature grille and headlights on the speaker surrounds. The Renegade’s seats easily fold flat to create a level load floor. But even then, the space is average at best.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Jeep vehicles use the excellent Uconnect infotainment system, which offers a simple, attractive, and intuitive interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available, however, and that’s a significant shortcoming in any vehicle, particularly one with a lot of youthful appeal. The Renegade’s basic radio can be replaced by a 5.0- or 6.5-inch touchscreen, with the 6.5 bringing navigation into the high-res picture. A Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, integrated apps, and voice control are available at extra cost.
