2017 Jeep Compass
Fresh off a complete redesign and working hard to emulate its attractive big brother, the Grand Cherokee, the 2017 Jeep Compass is a compact and affordable SUV with a host of high-tech options and several upmarket interior features. It ventures into a narrow wedge of market territory between the subcompact Jeep Renegade and the compact Cherokee, an area of the crossover jungle where no direct competitors currently reside. (The new Compass was designed and sized to compete in global markets where the Cherokee is considered too large.) What’s missing is a powertrain that’s as impressive as the rest of the vehicle. The Compass’s only engine makes it slow to accelerate, and the clunky nine-speed automatic transmission that pairs with the available all-wheel-drive system only exacerbates the problem. Still, this Jeep earns props for offering an off-road-ready Trailhawk version at a reasonable price, and for making all-wheel drive an affordable option in non-Trailhawk models. While the Compass has almost as many faults as charms, there’s still nothing quite like a Jeep.
What’s New for 2017?
The Compass was completely redesigned for the 2017 model year. Its new face echoes the handsome looks of the brand’s largest model, the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Freshened powertrains replace the options from previous models, and a full complement of active safety and infotainment technologies are available to buyers willing to pay top dollar. To confuse matters, the previous-generation Compass will be sold alongside the new model through 2017, until the inventory of that model runs out.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that powers every Compass is lethargic, and the nine-speed automatic transmission we drove for this review was slow to react. On the plus side, this Jeep’s available all-wheel-drive system is by far the most capable in this class. From front-wheel-drive Sport models all the way to the top-of-the-line Limited, every Compass has the same 180-hp inline-four engine under the hood. A six-speed manual, available with both front- and all-wheel drive on the Sport and Latitude models, is the base transmission. Drivers who prefer an automatic will find a six-speed in front-wheel-drive models and a nine-speed in all-wheel drive Compasses. Steering and handling are high points for the lively Compass, but acceleration is yawn inducing. The brakes are also touchy, and this can make city driving awkward. The Compass feels more agile than its tall, boxy profile suggests. It responds quickly to inputs from the nicely weighted steering. There is some lean during tight cornering, but overall the Compass feels controlled, planted, and capable.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Compass’s interior is comfortable, functional, and has enough space for four adult passengers. The materials are classier than before, though still not upscale—to be fair, neither is the price, and the Compass is as nicely outfitted as much of its competition. Although it has an attainable starting price, the Compass comes standard with features such as keyless entry, push-button start, and cruise control. These are extra-cost items in many budget-friendly vehicles. Despite its boxy exterior, the Compass doesn’t outshine rivals when it comes to interior space. It has enough cargo capacity for an airport run, but long trips could be a squeeze, and in-cabin storage space is meager.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Chrysler’s Uconnect system is one of our favorite infotainment setups, and we’re glad to see it standard across the Compass’s lineup. Now if only Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard rather than optional. No matter which Compass you choose, you’ll be treated to a well-organized and easy-to-use touchscreen-infotainment system with a USB port and an auxiliary input. If smartphone integration were standard, we’d have no complaints.
