A new suspension for an incredible ride
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee also has all-new independent front and rear suspension designs. They feature isolated front and rear suspension cradles along with variable-rate rear springs to deliver improved on-road handling and comfort while complementing the vehicle’s renowned off-road capability.
The rear suspension boasts a class-leading 10.2 inches of travel to maintain legendary Jeep attributes.
The new rear suspension also allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle rather than underneath, for added convenience.
Load-leveling shocks are also available. These shocks react to payload levels and mechanically increase vehicle height when the vehicle has added rear payload. When payload is added to the vehicle, the shocks’ gas pressure increases until the vehicle. reaches normal ride height.
Advantages to load-leveling shocks include improved load handling and trailer-tow performance. Load-leveling shocks are available with Trailer-Tow packages (except V6 4×2 models) that do not already have the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension.
Jeep WJ Grand Cherokee Up Country Suspension Group
Welcome to the JeepSpecs.com in-depth page of WJ Generation Jeep Grand Cherokee up country suspension. Did we mis anything? Please get in touch with us and tell us about it!
The Up Country Suspension Group decal, shown above left, was used on Jeeps prior to 1999 (ZJ series). No WJ models have ever had a factory sticker or badge identifying this feature. The decal, which measures 3-9/16″ x 2-11/16″, is no longer available from Jeep (discontinued in fall 2006, part # 5DL32MXW, the original MSRP was $83.75).
From the launch of the 1999 models and up until September 2, 2003, the Up Country Suspension Group package has been an available option on all WJ models, except (for marketing reasons) 2002-2004 Limited’s with the HO engine. Utilizing upgraded shocks, springs and tires, the UC package claims to give about 1″ of additional lift, with a slightly firmer and steadier ride. However, there seems to be a variety of different springs that have been used for this option, with some owners claiming only 5/8″ of lift while others have stated higher. The “body roll” factor seems to be worse on most models with this option (a shortcoming which can be easily solved with an upgraded rear sway bar ).
Overland models with and without Up Country Suspension
Starting at the end of model year 2002 production, Jeep introduced a “delete” option for the Up Country Suspension, which up until that time had been standard on all Overland models. The “delete” option, however, just takes away the Up Country shocks and springs and not the skid plates, tow hooks or upgraded tires. The reason for this change is that supposedly research showed some customers preferred the ride of the “softer” standard suspension, although it has never been promoted that way.
A problem that came up with the “delete” option is that the Up Country package ordering code (“SDA”) was confusing. It was offered as a “$0.00” no cost option, so when ordering a new vehicle, many dealers and customers had mistakenly checked the box for this, as it is defined only as “QuadraCoil Suspension”. Since it was “free”, customers and dealers assumed “why not put it on the order”. Since QuadraCoil Suspension is standard on all models of Grand Cherokeee anyway, by checking the box you were in effect deleting the Up Country Suspension and “bringing it back” to the standard suspension level. There was no mention of the U/C option being “deleted” on the sticker, nor was a credit given for taking the feature away. Any Overland models that have the “SDA/ QuadraCoil” option listed on the sticker do NOT have the Up Country Suspension components.
Up Country package discontinued for all models as of August 31, 2003
All models built after August 2003 were no longer offered with the Up Country package, the special shocks and springs were discontinued. Skid plates and tow hooks, formerly included with the Up Country package and also available separately, became standard on the Overland and optional on all other models.
Adding the Up Country components to non U/C vehicles:
WJ owners having the standard suspension (Quadra-coil) can add part or all of the UC package components to their vehicles. Although, like adding any other parts or options after the fact, it is much more expensive. All that is really needed are the springs and shocks (plus the skid plates and/or tow hooks if desired). The end result will probably be around 1/2″ of increased lift.

2012 Jeep WK2 Grand Cherokee SRT8 Active Damping Suspension System
Welcome to the JeepSpecs.com guide on the 2012 WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee active damping suspension system. Did we miss anything? get in touch with us and let us know!
While the SRT8 vehicles are at home on the track, they also need to be comfortable on a day-to-day basis. To answer this need the 2012 Charger, Challenger, 300C and Grand Cherokee SRT8s have user-selectable multi-mode systems that affects settings such as damping rates and shift points.
The SRT8 suspension is part of an Active Damping System (ADS). The ADS includes unique shock absorbers, an Active Damping Control Module (ADCM), and three accelerometers that work together to modify the ride of the suspension over varying road conditions. There are three active damping sensors. The front sensors are located in each front wheel well next to the brake line junction. The rear sensor is mounted in the right rear wheel well on the shock tower. The sensors are 3 wire, 5V reference sensors wired directly to the Active Damping Control Module.
The Active Damping System shock assembly is similar to a conventional coil over shock with the addition of a shock solenoid assembly mounted on the side of its body with a three wire harness connector attached to it. The ADS shock assembly is serviced the same as a conventional shock absorber, with the addition of disconnecting the ADS harness connector from behind the splash shield.
The SRT front suspension is similar to the standard front suspension but some components have been modified for unique ride, handling, and steering performance. Service of all front suspension components remain the same as the standard components. The front knuckle for the SRT is different from the standard knuckle. Although similar in appearance, the knuckle has been modified to accept the larger tire and wheel assembly. Also, the mounting bosses for the disc brake caliper have been moved downward to allow for mounting of the Brembo disc brake caliper.
The front stabilizer bar diameter has been increased for the SRT. It is serviced in the same manner as the standard bar.
The ADS shock assemblies are similar to conventional shock absorbers with the addition of a shock solenoid assembly and the associated wiring mounted to the shock absorber body. Please note that because the shock absorber is a monotube design, it is important to never support the shock by its tubular housing.
While some ADS components look similar to standard components, it is important to remember that these parts should not be interchanged.
The non-Jeep SRT8 models have two modes – AUTO and SPORT. AUTO mode provides standard settings and is latching at key OFF and re-start. SPORT mode changes suspension settings from normal to firm and is also latching at key OFF and re-start.
These modes are selected via a radio interface on the 300 and Charger SRT8 vehicles, a center-stack mounted button on Challenger SRT8s, or a center-console-mounted dial on Grand Cherokee SRT8s.
The Grand Cherokee SRT8 has user selectable settings that are chosen via a five-position dial. The settings are AUTO, TOW, SNOW, SPORT, and TRACK.
AUTO is the default key ON mode and is geared to provide for economy. In TOW mode the suspension remains in AUTO mode while the engine performance is optimized to provide maximum torque.
When SNOW is selected, the suspension remains in AUTO as well, but the transmission will start in 2nd gear and the electronic limited slip differential (ELSD) is optimized for low-traction situations.
SPORT mode firms the suspension up while the transmission and ELSD both switch to more aggressive settings.
Selecting TRACK mode causes the suspension to change to full firm while the transmission and ELSD both switch to more aggressive settings as well.
