2004 Jeep Cherokee CRD Limited 2.5 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Shuddered badly when turning left or right from a junction.

General Comments:

Noisy harsh diesel engine from another era.

Parts are hard to obtain and very slow to arrive, even through the main dealer, and are also extremely expensive.

Manufacturers MPG figures of 31.7 are very optimistic. On an 150 mile drive averaging 60 MPH I just scraped 30 MPG.

This aside it does have some good points. It’s very comfortable and well kitted out. It is well built and sturdy.

Offroad or in treacherous conditions it’s no pretender.

It will tow anything or plough through the deepest snowbound roads without fuss.

2004 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4.0 V6 from North America

Faults:

I just got it, so the only thing that has gone wrong has been the governor pressure sensor.

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 V6 and my engine light was on when I bought it from its previous owner. I took it to an auto parts place and they said it was the governor pressure sensor. I already changed it once, and it ran great for about a week, then it seemed to burn out again. What can be the problem?

2004 Jeep Cherokee CRD Renegade 2.8 turbo diesel from Zimbabwe

Summary:

I really love using this car!

Faults:

All of the following were resolved by the dealer under warranty without reservation:

Main computer died at 5000? km and was replaced; Passenger front seat leather stitching came undone at 18000km and cover was replaced; three or four other minor issues not worth mentioning which were also resolved at dealer’s cost without any problems.

General Comments:

Very quick for a diesel — after all it does produce 119kW and 400Nm and all this from a 2.8 litre 4 cylinder diesel!

I expected a worse gear change and was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it is.

Comfortable ride, even though slightly hard (remember it is basically a truck!)

Fantastic with loads, but uses a bit more than usual amounts of fuel.

Slightly heavier than the EPA-rated 22-27 mpg; in town I use between 10 and 11.5 litres per 100km, and out of town I use between 9 and 11 litres per 100km, but the 11 was with many passengers and a large very loaded trailer cruising at 110km/hr.

Same owner, follow-up comments. We have had an exceptionally wet rainy season this year, and my Jeep which has now done over 50 000 km is still performing exceptionally well. It really likes these conditions. Original set of tyres (Wrangler S4) replaced at 50 000 km with BF Goodrich AT, but the old ones do still have a couple of thousand of wear left in them. I have had in the interim three instances in which the vehicle started to lose power, and when I stopped and restarted the engine the problem had disappeared. Dealer unable to diagnose, but the car has not actually let me down. Have done a bit of minor offroading and one trip of heavy bad conditions, and the car did very well in all instances. Just wish I could buy another one because the new model Liberty is not quite as «nice» to look at!

The vehicle has now done about 140,000 km. Some new problems have appeared. A «squeaky» noise from the engine — dealer replaced all timing belt tensioners, problem not solved — then tack welded pulley on to alternator — still not solved — now suspect that it might be something to do with lower belt pulley — but dealer has at this stage agreed to repair at no charge, given the charges I have unnecessarily incurred so far.

Driver’s side seat bottom is cracking even though it is in otherwise good condition, and both front door speakers are vibrating, so I can’t listen to Dire Straits any more until I replace them.

2 odd noises from suspension or body — one is a sort of rubbery crunching or squeaking noise, and the other sounds as though the floor is coming adrift, but only when one goes over a pothole, but not if one hits a bump. The dealer has been unable to diagnose so far, and I have replaced all shocks (dampers) and all bushes with no change.

Otherwise, to its credit, the vehicle still runs well and I still enjoy using it. Major service just cost me over $800, without any brake work — just filters, lubes, labour and «sundries» of $31.

Still using BFG tyres, have done nearly 90,000 km with them, and they will probably last another 5,000-10,000.
