Help me fix my car. My 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee won’t start — IOD Fuse out?
I just tried to start our car but it won’t turn over. I just hear a clicking sound. Since I’d been gone for a week, I was assuming the battery was dead but that’s not the case as the internal lilghts are working. When I turn the key, in the dash occasionally I see a brief message that says «IOD fuse out.» I looked in the owner’s manual and can’t find what fuse # that is. Do I simply need to replace the fuse? What # is it? Any suggestions? While the internal lights work, the power windows aren’t working — nor is the car stereo. The car stereo has caused lots of problems in the past and resulted in my fixing it by fixing that fuse but I don’t remember which one that was either. Here is a video of what is happening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGBFAiB9hmY

About to head off for a run. Is this something AAA or Geico roadside can handle or do I need to have it towed?

AAA will only solve problems such as getting a new battery or tire and you have to have the right truck come to you to get this type of service. I imagine the insurance company/car manufacturer coverage is similar since they all use the same towing services. The car needs to get to someone who will repair your car after the right part is identified to be needed whether that is your local shop/dealer or your next door neighbor who’s helping you out.

Check the battery voltage with a multimeter. Some cars won’t start if it is below 11V even though the lights will turn on.

IOD fuse is notorious for blowing in cherokees and is meant to stop current draw from your battery when the car isn’t used for a while.

With all the ad revenue generated by this site, I’d thought you’d be driving a new Jeep Grand Cherokee and not one that’s 12 years old.

Exactly. You beat me to it. Check the battery. If you’re not going to be driving for prolonged periods, then you should keep the battery charged with a trickle charger at all times, and maintain the battery at 12.65 volts or higher. I have my charger connected all the time when not driving. The battery is more than 8 years old and still maintains over 12.65 volts for a week with no charging.

+1, bad battery has not been ruled out. They degrade over time (faster if the car sits for long periods), and you get to point where they can make a light bulb light up, but can’t power the starter. Electronics can also go wonky if the voltage deviates too far from normal. Your dash looks very blinky, but maybe that’s just an artifact from the video. Check the fuses lwood mentioned first, because it’s incredibly easy and you have an iod fuse error code. Then, check battery voltage. Then, bring your car to a shop, or buy your gearhead friend a bottle of whiskey.

Even if the battery voltage is low but you can’t check it because you don’t have a multimeter or don’t know how to use a multimeter or don’t even know where the battery terminals are, you can try to get a jump start from somebody who has the most elementary skills. If it is a low battery, the car should start with a jump and you can charge it by driving around for a few miles.

Rojo, I don’t mean this to be a punk comment, but rather a helpful one. If you got 12 years out of any Jeep (other than a Wrangler, and even there that’ s not horrible), then count your lucky stars you got that much out of a crap vehicle, and go get a better one next time. Toyota Honda Kia Subaru My two cents.

I’ve never purchased a vehicle not made in the USofA. Proud of that fact. If Trump would do the right thing and bow out, I guarantee I could beat Biden in the election. Any chance I can get my next phone made in the USA? Now the nice car in the house is a VW Atlas. We love it. I’ve had a couple of Jeeps. When my first one got to 100k I had a ton of problems with it. I called a HS buddy who worked for Chrysler at the time to ask for tips. He said, «How many miles does it have?» I said 100 hundred something and he stopped me and said, «Sell it. I wonder if we design the cars to break down at that level.» This one also has over 100k but it has a fairly new engine and I replaced the battery not too long ago but it seems like the tail light is always causing me problems, radio etc. I just recently did the AC evaporator.
