Toyota, Honda and nearly every other major manufacturer has beaten Hyundai to market with a hybrid powertrain solution, but the South Korean company is making up for lost time as the Paris Motor Show draws near. The latest development is the Santa Fe petrol-electric hybrid SUV concept, which will be on show at next week’s Paris event.

The vehicle’s full name is the Santa Fe Blue Hybrid and it features Hyundai’s proprietary parallel hybrid drive system, which mates the 2.4L Theta four-cylinder engine to a six-speed automatic transmission and a 41hp (30kW) electric motor with 150lb-ft (205Nm) of instantaneous torque. Hyundai claims that this system will serve as the foundation for all its future hybrids.

Developed at the carmaker’s Namyang R&D center in South Korea, the hybrid system reduces CO2 emissions for the Santa Fe to just 148 g/km and delivers a fuel economy rating of 38mpg (6.2L/100km) on the combined cycle.

To maximize fuel economy, all of the Theta engine’s major driveline and cooling system components have been optimized to reduce friction, while the crankcase has been filled with low friction oil. The vehicle also features an engine stop-start system, electrically powered steering, and low resistance tires.

Electrical power is stored in a 270V lithium-polymer rechargeable battery, which has significant advantages over lithium-ion batteries, including higher energy density and lower manufacturing costs. The polymer battery is also more resistant to physical damage and can also take more charge-discharge cycles before storage capacity begins to degrade, according to Hyundai.

Hyundai already has an LPG-hybrid version of its Elantra (known as the Avante in Korea) in the works, due to go on sale in its home market in July next year with a global roll-out to follow shortly after. That car will set several firsts, as it is expected to be first to market with lithium-polymer batteries and LPG-hybrid technology in a series-production car.

Although it looks like a regular Santa Fe with a fancy paint job and a glass roof, this SUV is Hyundai’s technological showcase. Inside, it harbors a proprietary parallel-hybrid drive system that will be the foundation for all future Hyundai hybrids.

The powertrain is the 2.4-liter Theta four-cylinder engine coupled to a six-speed automatic with the addition of a 30kW electric motor. To squeeze the most miles out of each gallon, Hyundai reduced friction in the driveline and cooling components, and retuned the engine-control software for efficiency and to turn the engine off when idling. Hyundai’s Integrated Starter Generator, meanwhile, was added to bring the engine back to life when the gas pedal is pressed. The steering is assisted by electric motors, and very low-rolling-resistance tires further reduce consumption.

Electric assistance comes in the form of a 40-hp electric motor that churns out 151 lb-ft of torque. The motor is directly coupled to the automatic transmission. Electrical power is accumulated in a 270V lithium-polymer rechargeable battery. The same type of battery will be found in the 2011 Sonata hybrid. Not to be confused with a lithium- ion battery such as the one in the Chevy Volt, li-poly batteries are cheaper to make and can handle more charge-discharge cycles, according to Hyundai.

The end result is an impressive 38 mpg on the European combined cycle. Compare that to the 34 mpg that the Ford Escape hybrid manages around town and you have yourself quite an efficient family hauler. Hyundai failed to mention production specifics, but we expect to see the Santa Fe Blue hybrid roll out sometime in 2010 as part of Hyundai’s plan to introduce seven new vehicles by the end of 2011.

The 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid is a carry-over model from last year and the range comprises the same three hybrid (HEV) and two plug-in hybrid (PHEV) trims, but there are detail changes to paints, trims, and equipment. The HEV SEL Premium now gets standard H-Tex leatherette upholstery, a surround-view monitor, and a blind-spot-view monitor, and the HEV Limited benefits from the latter two features as well. Some features become standard on all HEV and PHEV trims, namely Highway Driving Assist, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation with over-the-air updates, and dynamic voice recognition. All HEV models also gain access to the regular Santa Fe’s Hampton Gray, Calypso Red, and Stormy Sea paint colors this year, while all HEVs and PHEVs get access to the brand-new Serenity White Pearl, which replaces last year’s Quartz White. Much like its Kia Sorento relative, there isn’t much excitement to be had piloting the Santa Fe and its driving manners can best be described as inoffensive and agreeable. It’s not as ponderous as other SUVs and is agile enough to get out of its own way when tackling corners, but it’s less fun to drive than a Honda Passport or Mazda CX-90, if that sort of thing matters to you in an SUV. More importantly for its target market, it rides comfortably enough and offers a refined highway ride, sometimes lapsing into a little float and wallow, along with moderate lean when cornering with enthusiasm. It’s quiet on the move and the hybrid powertrain is smooth and unobtrusive, matching the Santa Fe’s temperament. It’s not quick but the hybrid assistance means it’s nicely responsive at low speeds, while the regenerative braking is blended in smoothly. The six-speed auto ‘box successfully recedes into the background as it goes about its duties.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid A Good SUV?

Just because the Santa Fe Hybrid fails to thrill in any discipline, it doesn’t mean it should be dismissed, even if it’s now in its final model year and getting on a bit. It doesn’t have any glaring faults and it’s at most average in terms of economy and the driving experience in this class — and definitely not bad. It has a superb warranty, is well-built, and is roomy and practical, so it does all the things expected of a mid-size SUV. The PHEV offers a genuinely useful all-electric range of over 30 miles, but keep in mind that the little 90-hp electric motor moves the car around slowly and it takes a lot of patience to drive around in EV mode. This detracts from its appeal and reminds you that it’s not a proper EV, making us gravitate towards the better-rounded HEV, which is still a great buy even today, and offers the same performance as the PHEV.

What 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Model Should I Buy?

In terms of powertrain, the HEV is around $6k cheaper than a similar PHEV trim and we don’t believe the PHEV’s all-electric range is worth that unless you are going to use it every day and diligently plug it in at night. Even then, the slow all-electric progress due to the small electric motor will be irritating. For us, the HEV SEL Premium is the best buy in the lineup. It’s even better this year with all the additional equipment added to the 2023 model and with big-ticket items such as 19-inch alloys, a sunroof, surround- and blind-spot-view monitors, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system all standard, it has everything you need and nothing you don’t.
