Ford Ranger body styles explained
The Ranger Regular Cab — aka single cab — has just two seats and two doors, but the longest load area.
The Ranger Super Cab — aka crew cab or extended cab — has regular front seats and occasional rear seats, accessed via smaller doors. The load bes on this model is over 25cm longer than the Double Cab.
The Ranger Double Cab is the bestselling version, and most popular with lifestyle buyers, as it combines a still usefully big load bed with a cabin comfortably large enough for five people.
It has the shortest load space of the three Ranger variants, and but beats every current rival for loading length (the only exception being the 1,610mm SsangYong Musso Rhino, which has a longer cargo area than the Ranger Wildtrak only).
More info about the Ford Ranger’s load area
All models measure 1,139mm between the arches, which means you shouldn’t have any problem fitting a Euro pallet in the back. You’ll probably need a forklift though, as every current model has four-wheel drive and a minmum loading height of 835mm.
The tailgate does fold completely flat, making access to the cargo bed easy, and there are fixing points to help secure any load.
The load area can also be equipped with a three-pin plug socket, if required, while there are a variety of load canopy options, including roller-shutters and hardtops.
2023 Ford Ranger Spied In SuperCrew Trim With A Long Bed
It rides on an extended wheelbase and could be exclusive to the US market.
Technically speaking, the new Ford Ranger has yet to debut for US buyers. The global debut of Ford’s midsize truck was in November 2021, so we know how it will look. We also know the general stats, though powertrain options are sure to differ between markets. Now, we see there could be another option for Ford customers in North America, where bigger is generally seen as better.
These fresh spy images clearly show a stretched Ranger. The wheelbase is noticeably longer compared to the global model in SuperCrew spec, and the reason is simple. This truck pairs the bigger cabin of the SuperCrew truck with the longer 6-foot bed. It’s a pairing you can’t get now, as the long bed is only offered with the smaller SuperCab greenhouse. SuperCrew trucks get a 5-foot bed.
Our spy sources believe this will be an option offered only in North America. There are a couple of good reasons to support that, with the first being big trucks sell well in the region. The six-foot bed will certainly be appealing to folks hauling stuff on a regular basis, and having room inside for five adults is a bonus. Beyond that, we’ve seen no such combination offered on the next-generation Ranger in other markets.

Could a larger Ranger impact F-150 sales? A bigger cabin with a longer bed does encroach on Ford’s fullsize pickup, but only on the smaller side of the equation. An F-150 SuperCrew is available with the larger 6.5-foot bed, and stepping down to a SuperCab, you can still get the best-selling truck with an 8-foot bed.
What else can we expect in the US-spec Ford Ranger? The global model offers a modern digital cockpit with digital gauges and either a 10.1-inch or a 12-inch center infotainment screen. There’s no reason to think Ford will change the interior, though it’s unlikely we’ll see the range of turbocharged diesel engines offered in other markets. The familiar 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder should return, and a boosted V6 could be optional. The hot Ranger Raptor has already been confirmed for the US market, likely wielding the 400-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter engine from the Ford Explorer ST.
The Ranger Raptor is expected to go on sale in 2023, but before that happens, the standard model needs to debut in North America. That should happen later this year.
How to Turn a Ford Ranger Into a Flat Bed
Ford Rangers are very versatile small trucks. While the standard pickup bed helps with all sorts of payload variations, there are times when having no bed walls nor a tailgate creates a more viable vehicle for your needs. Many farmers, ranchers and landscapers use flatbed Rangers to carry loads on the job. Other applications include outfitting the truck with specialized equipment and toolboxes that must remain unencumbered by the confining bed.
Step 1
Unbolt the bed anchors from the floor of the Ranger’s bed with the socket set. These bolts run down into the frame, so removing them will take some time due to their length. The heads of these bolts are exposed and easily accessible from the inside of the bed.
Step 2
Open the fuel door (if your Ranger has a fuel door in the side of the bed and not the cab) and unbolt the fuel filler neck flange with the socket set. Pull the flange out so that the filler neck can move out of the bed easily.
Step 3
Grab one side of the bed while your helper grabs the other. Lift the bed up and off the Ranger’s frame and walk it straight backward until you’re clear of the frame, then set it somewhere out of the way. Make sure you don’t snag the fuel filler neck while doing so.
Step 4
Lift the flatbed and walk it over the Ranger’s frame in reverse of how you removed the old bed. Set it in position, being mindful of the fuel filler neck. Route the filler neck into position and bolt it in place with the socket set.
Step 5
Bolt the new flatbed to the Ranger’s frame with the socket set. You may need your helper’s aid in shifting the bed slightly to make sure the bolt holes in the bed line up precisely with the holes in the Ranger’s frame.

- Many off-road and RV retailers sell flatbeds for pickups. If your local ones do not, you can check with trailer manufacturers, camper shell retailers and your local Ford dealer.
