Ford Reveals Its VW-Based EV Crossover for Europe, the Explorer
Built on Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform and set to begin production in Germany soon, this Europe-market crossover is considerably smaller than the three-row Explorer we get here.
- Ford has revealed a new EV model for Europe called the Explorer.
- This compact SUV will be built in Germany and is based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
- There is also an Explorer EV slated for the U.S., but it will likely be considerably larger than this one.
Ford has promised that an electric version of the familiar Explorer three-row SUV is coming to the U.S. sometime soon, but this is not that car. Instead, this Ford Explorer is a new, smaller electric crossover built in Germany that’s exclusively for the European market. It uses Volkswagen’s MEB platform as part of a partnership between Ford and VW and is set to go on sale later this year.
More on Ford EV SUVs
Ford hasn’t provided exact dimensions for this Explorer EV, but to us it looks like a compact SUV in the vein of the Escape or Bronco Sport that we get in the U.S. It has a modern-looking grille-less face, a relatively low-slung but still boxy shape, and interesting details including a slatted design element on the C-pillar and chunky wheel patterns. Inside, it has a large 14.6-inch vertical touchscreen and a digital gauge cluster, plus a spacious center console and a lockable compartment behind the screen. It’s a two-row setup with five seats, and Ford claims 17 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat.
We don’t know the powertrain specs on the Explorer yet, either, but we figure it will have similarly sized battery packs as the Volkswagen ID.4, which offers 58.0-kWh and 77.0-kWh battery packs. Ford says it will offer rear- and all-wheel drive versions, so we figure outputs will range from under 200 horsepower for the base version up to over 300 horsepower for the top models.
Ford will produce the Explorer in Cologne, Germany, and it’s slated only for Europe at this point. Pricing starts at the equivalent of $48,000 and Ford is taking reservations now. We doubt we’ll see this model come to the U.S., but it could give us an idea of how the Blue Oval’s future electric SUV models will look. A second larger MEB-based Ford electric crossover is set to arrive in Europe next year, and we’ve previously speculated that that one could end up in the U.S.

All-new Ford Explorer PHEV coming to Europe with 40-km range
Heads up everybody, Ford is bringing the Explorer to the Old Continent
The all-new Ford Explorer SUV is set to make its European debut later this year with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and seating for seven.
Inside the new Explorer works a 3-liter EcoBoost V6 petrol engine (350 PS) that teams up with an electric motor (100 PS) for a total output of 450 PS and 840 Nm of torque. A Li-ion battery pack (13.1 kWh) allows for a maximum pure electric range of 40 km (25 miles).
The powertrain sends resources to all four corners via a 10-speed automatic gearbox and Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel drive system.
Drivers can select how electricity is deployed through four modes – EV Auto, EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge. Ford says the all-new Explorer will deliver a fuel consumption average of 3.4 l/100 km and 78 g/km of CO2 emissions.
The cabin is built around a 10.1-inch central display mounted in a portrait position and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Standard driving nannies include the likes of Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane-Centring.
With the second and third rows of seats folded down, the Explorer offers a boot space of 2,274 liters, with the cabin alone packing 123 liters work of storage spaces.
In Europe, the new Ford Explorer will be offered in two grades – Explorer ST-Line and Explorer Platinum.

Explorer Premium.
Ford introduces an all-electric Explorer SUV, but it’s only for Europe
The new electric crossover SUV is built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform and won’t be available for sale in the US. The Explorer EV is part of Ford’s plan to electrify its entire lineup in Europe by 2030.

Ford’s third-ever all-electric vehicle is a Europe-only crossover SUV with one of the automaker’s most popular nameplates. The Explorer EV will also be the first in a wave of new plug-in vehicles for the automaker’s overseas lineup, as it works toward an electric-only portfolio in Europe by 2030.
The Explorer EV may carry a familiar nameplate, but it will be built on top of an unfamiliar platform — for Ford, at least. The automaker is using Volkswagen’s flexible MEB architecture for the new EV, which will be built at Ford’s factory in Cologne, Germany. The Explorer EV will be the first of two vehicles from Ford that will utilize VW’s electric platform as part of an agreement that was established when the two companies formed a global alliance in 2019.

Ford said it won’t release the vehicle’s range until it’s closer to production, but it did reveal details about its pricing. The Explorer EV will be available in two trims — Explorer and Explorer Premium — with starting pricing “less than €45,000” (or about $48,250). Reservations are open now through Ford’s European website.
The most noticeable feature in the new electric Explorer is a moveable 15-inch center touchscreen that the company says should be better for dealing with outside glare. The screen, which can move up and down, also conceals a built-in lockable storage space for valuables. Here’s a GIF of the movable screen:
The Ford Explorer EV is significant because it’s only the third all-electric vehicle to be announced by the iconic American automaker. (I’m not counting the Ford Focus Electric and some of the company’s compliance vehicles, for what it’s worth.) The company’s current EV lineup includes the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, which have propelled Ford to its status as the No. 2 seller of electric vehicles in the US. Still, the company has a ways to go if it wants to catch up to the No. 1 seller, Tesla, and the European market will play a big role in that.
It also needs to get a better handle on a number of quality issues that have plagued its EV push. Ford recently recalled over a dozen F-150 Lightnings over concerns about a battery problem. In 2022, Ford issued more recalls in America than any other automaker.
