Model year 2001 60th Anniversary Edition WJ, shown with the Cherokee & Wrangler versions

During the 2001 model year, a special 60th Anniversary Edition of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was produced. Offered in two colors only, Black and Silverstone Metallic, they were available for a limited time only, starting February 5th 2001. A reported 3,822 of the Grand Cherokee versions were built, 1,821 black and 2,001 silver color models. They came with exclusive exterior badging plus these additional features:

• Unique two-tone interior – Agate instrument panel and door trim combined with Light Taupe leather trimmed seats.
• Chrome wheels
• Special embroidered floor mats

Jeep also produced 4,067 60th Anniversary editions of the Wramgler TJ (1,862 Black and and 2,205 Silver) and 5,157 Cherokee XJ’s (2,379 Black and 2,778 Silver).

The Jeep Cherokee 60th anniversary

The Jeep Cherokee 60th anniversary was only made in small numbers in the last year of XJ production back in 2001. Only 5157 of these classic Cherokee XJ’s built. (2379 Black and 2778 Silver). See military green tshirt . Great gift for off roaders.

XJ Jeep with cool wheels and BFGs

Cherokee production ended in May 2001. The Toledo South Assembly Plant in Ohio USA was devoted to XJ Jeep production. This factory was completely demolished after a total of 18 years and 2,884,172 XJs had passed through the production line.

How rare are they in the UK?

Very rare. You can see from the DVLA data on these 2 graphs below taken from August 2022. There are only 197 left on the road in the UK. The rest have either been placed on SORN, scrapped or will be scrapped for parts. My own Jeep was a Silver TD with 140k when sold. Pretty good condition really. The parts can all be obtained easily thanks to the global Jeep fanbase network.

Where can I buy one?

Apart from Autotrader, Classic Car and eBay you will not find one. Some of these photos are from davisautosports.com who seem to have the best selection. Otherwise it’s pot luck or look in your local Jeep-Club.co.uk website. The badge came from Just for Jeeps and the interior shot was a UK model seen on ebay.

While most of these XJ Jeeps were powered by the bullitt proof 180 bhp 4.0 straight six engine, with automatic 4 speed gearbox or manual 5 speed gearbox, they were were mostly sold in the North American market. There were Jeep Cherokee 60th anniversary models sold in Europe, making the UK version a Right-Hand Drive 4cyl 2.5 TD diesel a rare model. There are probably only a few hundred left now. That’s as rare as a 2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt.

What you get with the UK version

Giving around 37mpg (UK) on a run and a 30mpg average, it’s a cheap truck to drive. The 2001 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD Turbo Diesel 60th Anniversary, 4×4, 5 Door Station Wagon, with a 5 Speed Manual gearbox, 221 feet pounds of Torque at 2000rpm. The 16 inch 5 Spoke 7J Alloy wheels are smart. Full Leather, Electric Heated Seats, Leather Steering Wheel. Trip Computer, Air Con, ABS, PAS, Heated Rear Windows, Electric Windows/Mirrors, Smart Key Immobilizer, Side Impact Guards, 2 Power Sockets, Illuminated Vanity Mirrors, Remote Central Locking Keys, Seat & Steering Wheel Height Adjustment.

The 2.5 litre VM Diesel engine runs great, pulls well. It will cruise happily at 70-80mph, Slow it down to 55/60mph and you’ll see over 40 UK mpg, Normal day to day driving you’ll see 27-35 UK mpg. Then it will drive great off road as well.
