Компания Jeep продолжает делать ставку на китайский рынок. Прошлогоднее моторшоу в Шанхае стало площадкой для дебюта концептуального кроссовера Yuntu, который переродился в совершенно серийную модель Grand Commander. Премьера этой новинки и состоялась в Пекине.
Внешность паркетника соответствует текущему дизайн-коду марки Jeep — передняя часть кузова и оптика напоминают нынешние Grand Cherokee, а взлетающая к задней стойке подоконная линия отсылает к Renegade. Под капотом у Grand Commander — 2-литровая турбочетверка в двух вариантах мощности — на 234 л.с. (350 Нм) и 265 л.с. (400 Нм). Привод будет передним только в начальных комплектациях с базовым мотором, во всех остальных случаях — подключаемый полный, с системой выбора режимов езды Jeep Select Terrain.
Пока что конкурент «Хайлендера» и «Терамонта» будет и выпускаться, и продаваться только в Китае, хотя со временем его в теории могут вывести и на другие локальные рынки. А вот для рынка США Jeep разрабатывает похожие по габаритам модели с ностальгическим названием Wagoneer и Grand Wagoneer. Эти автомобили дебютируют ближе к 2020 году. Grand Commander имеет три ряда сидений и посадочную формулу 2+3+2, но появится и пятиместная версия. Причем, по информации китайских сертификационных органов, такой вариант лишится приставки Grand: кроссоверы с двумя рядами сидений будут называться Jeep Commander. Хотя кузов у двух модификаций одинаковый.
По неофициальным данным, новое семейство построено на растянутой платформе Compact US Wide с поперечным расположением двигателя и основным передним приводом, которая знакома по кроссоверу Jeep Cherokee. По длине (4873 мм) и размеру колесной базы (2800 мм) Commander и Grand Commander почти совпадают с моделью Toyota Highlander.
