2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

The Grand Cherokee Trackhawk flips the Jeep thing on its head by swapping trail ratings for track raging. This almighty family hauler has a 707-hp supercharged Hellcat V-8 engine stuffed between its front fenders. It may not have the composure of some high-performance competitors, but the ultimate Grand Cherokee is insanely fast, can tow 7200 pounds, and seats a family in comfort. While it’s the most expensive Jeep ever, it’s also one of the most powerful SUVs on the planet and one of the quickest. When we crunch the numbers and compare the stats, this absurd Jeep delivers the best value versus all high-end, high-speed SUV alternatives.

What’s New for 2019?

The notorious Hellcat V-8 (it makes 707 horsepower if you haven’t heard) was first packed into the Grand Cherokee in 2018. The machine was fortified with stronger drivetrain components and upgraded cooling systems compared with its less outrageous SRT sibling. For 2019, there are no changes.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

While the ultimate Grand Cherokee is awesome, its startling starting price is nearly $20K more than the 475-hp SRT version. That’s a bargain, however, compared with the cost of its extra-expensive rivals. Sure, it’s missing their refinement and reputation, but the max Jeep has a reputation of its own and can dominate a $160K Porsche Cayenne Turbo S at the drag strip. ‘Merica! Needless to say, we’d swipe right for the Trackhawk. The only options we’d add are the Pirelli P Zero tires for max performance and the tow package for max towing capability.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Likes: All-road capability, Hellcat engine produces laughs and gasps, badass soundtrack.
Dislikes: Rough ride, supercharger whine hard to hear under heavy throttle, all-wheel drive prevents smoky burnouts.

The Trackhawk is the hottest thing ever to wear a Jeep badge. Its Hellcat engine has mind-blowing acceleration and a soundtrack that raises a metaphorical middle finger to local noise ordinances. Its 707 horsepower is identical to its Hellcat Challenger and Charger siblings, but its more restrictive exhaust system decreases torque by 5 lb-ft (645 total). The difference is negligible, and the Trackhawk’s all-wheel-drive traction allowed the Jeep to virtually teleport from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The ‘Hawk’s throttle was so responsive that we didn’t dare mat the pedal around town. Its instantaneous nature was saved for long straightaways that quickly felt short.

While the BMW X5 M and the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S have even higher cornering limits, the Trackhawk still has respectable, stable handling that can be exploited on twisty back roads and highway ramps—and it wouldn’t be totally out of its element on a racetrack. The electrically assisted steering system felt quick enough, but the thick-rimmed wheel didn’t relay as much road information as we’d like. Its Brembo brake calipers (six-piston front and four-piston rear) hauled the Trackhawk down from 70 mph in 168 feet. While its brake pedal felt firm and responsive during daily use, that distance is merely average among similar high-performance crossovers.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Do you care a lot about fuel economy? Then don’t invest in the Trackhawk. Its insatiable thirst for fuel is made obvious by its low EPA estimates and unspectacular results in our real-world testing. The 707-hp beast has worse government ratings than the Grand Cherokee SRT, which is no surprise. Still, both versions were the least efficient vehicles compared with similar alternatives. The Trackhawk matched its 17-mpg highway estimate on our 200-mile test circuit. Too bad its competitors were between 3 and 5 mpg better.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

Likes: Spacious and sporty cabin, loaded with standard features, capable of hauling both ass and luggage.
Dislikes: No massaging seats or custom options, slow infotainment-system responses.

If the Trackhawk’s extroverted exterior wasn’t proof enough, its racy interior further proves that this Jeep prefers racetracks and twisty roads to rocky trails. Inside, its ample passenger accommodations are highlighted by front seats that comfort and support, especially when tracking the ‘Hawk. Although the smooth leather on top of the dashboard and door panels made up for luxurious touches compared with the rubberized material used on cheaper Grands, the carryover switchgear and inconsistent panel gaps remind us that true luxury is reserved for premium-brand alternatives.

Every Hellcat-powered Grand Cherokee has an 8.4-inch touchscreen that blends into the dash. The infotainment system—called Uconnect—includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi as standard.

Its aggressive bodywork and powertrain set your heart to pounding, but it also inherits the cargo space and interior cubby storage from the regular Grand Cherokee range. This means similar carry-on capacity and the same limited number of places to secure small items so they don’t go ballistic when the driver decides to drop the hammer and defy the laws of physics.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Trackhawk has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Meanwhile, this ferocious SUV is fitted with an array of standard driver-assistance features such as automatic high-beams, lane-departure warning, and self-parking assist. While this technology adds convenience and protection, it doesn’t make the high-priced family hauler any cheaper. Key safety features include:

• Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
• Standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
• Standard blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Jeep has a shorter limited warranty compared with its competitors, but it provides the best powertrain protection. The Jeep Wave ownership program is standard on the Trackhawk, which includes two complimentary oil-change and tire-rotation services from the dealer per year for the first two years.

• Two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance is included

Двенадцать лет назад брутальный Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 с атмосферной «восьмеркой» Hemi 6.1 мощностью 420 л.с. находился в числе самых мощных и быстроходных внедорожников на рынке: динамичнее был разве что Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Но позже вышел целый ряд «заряженных» премиум-полноприводников с наддувными моторами мощностью свыше полтысячи сил. Сейчас в строю Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (570 л.с.), BMW X5 M и X6 M (575 л.с.), Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S (585 л.с.) и Bentley Bentayga (608 л.с.), а еще есть «кирпич» Mercedes-AMG G 65 с 630-сильным двигателем V12. Нынешний Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT с атмосферником Hemi 6.4 мощностью 475 л.с. на этом фоне выглядит бледно. Но подготовленный к автосалону в Нью-Йорке Grand Cherokee Trackhawk должен надолго застолбить звание самого динамичного внедорожника в мире. Ведь под капотом у него — компрессорная «восьмерка» мощностью 717 л.с.!

Двигатель Hemi V8 6.2 c шнековым компрессором IHI в развале, « надувающим» 0,8 бара избыточного давления, — тот же самый, что у купе Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat и седана Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. Но восьмиступенчатый «автомат» пришлось дополнительно усиливать, ведь в полноприводной машине на него ложится повышенная нагрузка. А сзади установлен самоблокирующийся дифференциал.

В компании обещают, что внедорожник массой 2,5 тонны сможет выстрелить до 60 миль в час (97 км/ч) всего за 3,5 секунды против 3,8 с у самого мощного Кайена и 4,0 с у Бентайги. Традиционную дреговую дистанцию в четверть мили (402 метра) Trackhawk способен одолеть за 11,6 секунды (это уровень суперкаров Porsche 911 Turbo S и Nissan GT-R), развив на выходе 186,6 км/ч. Максимальная скорость достигает 290 км/ч! При этом Trackhawk пригодится и в хозяйстве: он может буксировать прицеп массой до 3266 кг.

По сравнению с версией SRT усилена тормозная система: диаметр передних дисков увеличен с 375 до 400 мм, причем использованы составные диски с алюминиевой ступицей. Диаметр задних тормозов не изменился (350 мм), механизмы Brembo — шестипоршневые спереди и четырехпоршневые сзади.

Обидно лишь, что внешне Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk почти не отличается от «обычной» модификации SRT. Помогут в опознании разве что дополнительные воздухозаборники вместо противотуманок по углам переднего бампера, сдвоенные выпускные патрубки да характерные шильдики со стилизованным ястребом.

В Америке экстремальный Trackhawk начнут продавать к концу года. Цена пока не объявлена, но ожидается, что за машину попросят примерно 85 тысяч долларов против 67 тысяч за версию SRT. На фоне немецких конкурентов это немного, ведь Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S в Штатах стоит 109 тысяч, а за Porsche Cayenne Turbo S просят 162 тысячи долларов.
