If any single brand could perfectly represent modern American driving preferences, that would be Jeep, and the venerable off-road brand’s bread and butter is the Grand Cherokee. Unlike its soft-road capable rivals, the Grand Cherokee is a true Jeep that can tackle the most challenging trails in North America. Despite this capability, it doesn’t punish passengers with an unrefined highway ride or require you to compromise on luxury features. There are ten different models and a wide range of prices that broaden the Grand Cherokee’s appeal. Base Laredo models are spartan while the range-topping Summit is a leather-lined luxo-ute. Three different engines are offered—including a diesel—and while rear-wheel drive is standard, buyers looking to maximize the Grand Cherokee’s off-road prowess will order up their version with all-wheel drive.

What’s New for 2019?

Jeep has made a number of enhancements to the 2019 Grand Cherokee lineup, including the standardization of blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert across the board. The optional infotainment system now comes standard with navigation and a new 8.4-inch glass touchscreen with a crisper resolution. A new trim level—Limited X—joins the already wide array of available Grand Cherokee models and sports distinct front and rear bumpers, a performance hood that appears to be shared with the high-performance Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT (reviewed separately), and unique 20-inch wheels. Summit and Overland models receive updated wheel designs and three new colors are available: Slate Blue, Green Metallic, and Sting Gray.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Our annual pick for the past two model years has been the mid-range Altitude model with all-wheel drive, and it’s the one we continue to recommend for 2019. The Altitude trim automatically comes with the majority of the Grand Cherokee’s most desirable features, such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar, an infotainment system with navigation and an 8.4-inch touchscreen, onboard Wi-Fi, a power liftgate, and a heated steering wheel.

Engine, Transmission, Performance, and Towing

Likes: Gutsy and smooth standard V-6, precise steering, stout towing capacity.
Dislikes: Rough ride over uneven surfaces, no on-road athleticism, spongy brake-pedal feel.

The Grand Cherokee’s base engine is a V-6, but a V-8 is optional on Limited trims and above. A diesel V-6 is also offered and models equipped with this engine wear an EcoDiesel badge. The base V-6 pulls strongly and transmits very little vibration into the cabin, so it’s the powerplant we’d prefer; it’s well matched to the Grand Cherokee’s heft, and it does an admirable job of motivating it around town and merging into traffic. No matter the configuration, the Grand Cherokee has brawny towing capacity—6200 pounds for V-6 models, 7200 pounds with the V-8—that kicks its usefulness up another notch.

There’s nothing sporty about this utility vehicle. In the 2019 Grand Cherokee, rough stretches of pockmarked pavement send shivers through the chassis and into the cabin. The optional air suspension remedies this, as our Trailhawk test vehicle provided a more refined ride. The steering is precise and has a nice heft to it; the Jeep tracks straight, which makes for laid-back highway cruising. Soft in its first couple inches of travel, the Grand Cherokee’s brake pedal firms up quickly, and performance is on par with the rest of the class. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With the gasoline V-6 under its hood, the Grand Cherokee is fuel efficient by SUV standards, and in our testing, its highway fuel-economy estimates held true. The V-8 may have greater towing capacity, but it’s noticeably thirstier. The optional diesel engine’s fuel efficiency is unknown, as it has yet to be rated by the EPA. Equipped with the standard V-6 engine, our test vehicle delivered 25 mpg on our real-world highway fuel-economy loop, matching its 25-mpg EPA rating.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

Likes: Responsive and intuitive infotainment system, convincingly upscale interior design, spacious front and rear seats.
Dislikes: Panel fit and finish could be better, limited cubby storage inside cabin.

Stepping into the Grand Cherokee’s cabin provides either a sense of ruggedness or luxury depending on the model. The contoured dashboard houses an infotainment touchscreen atop chunky, redundant buttons and controls, and a 7.0-inch driver-facing LCD display is flanked by analog gauges. Jeep designers use soft-touch materials and leather where it counts—armrests, upper door panels, the dashboard—but cheaper hard plastic persists elsewhere.

Jeep’s excellent infotainment system—called Uconnect—is among our favorites for its ease of use and snappy response times. A dinky 5.0-inch display is standard; we’d recommend stepping up to the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen. Available rear-seat entertainment and in-car Wi-Fi make the Grand Cherokee a movie theater on wheels. A six-speaker audio system is standard, with the option of SiriusXM satellite radio; a 19-speaker Harman/Kardon setup is optional on the Overland and standard on Summit trims.

Behind its second row of seats, the Grand Cherokee has space for 11 of our carry-on cases and a total of 24 when we stowed the rear seat. The rear seat splits and folds in a 60/40 fashion; the operation is neat and tidy, too, requiring just one action to release the headrest and flop the seat down to its flat position.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

It may have missed the best crash-test ratings by a wide margin—it did not perform well in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s small-overlap front-crash tests but the Grand Cherokee still offers a comprehensive list of driver-assistance features. The Jeep Active Safety package is optional on Limited, Trailhawk, and Overland models. It includes adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and parallel- and perpendicular-parking assist. Buyers of the top-dog Summit receive all of these driver-assistance features as standard equipment. Key safety features include:

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Jeep’s warranty is nothing special. The Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe all offer much greater coverage, including 10-year powertrain warranties and two more years of coverage on the bumper-to-bumper warranty.
