2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate AWD Review
With lots of options for consumers in the mid-size, 3-row SUV segment, it’s easy for the Hyundai Santa Fe to get lost in the crowd. The Santa Fe has a lot to offer and it will give you a good value when compared with the competition. It has been upgraded with new exterior styling for 2017, and the safety equipment is a strong point for this vehicle.
Families looking for a vehicle with a third row will want to check out the new Santa Fe.
This weekend, we drove the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate AWD.
What’s New For 2017
The Hyundai Santa Fe gets new front and rear bumpers, new LED daytime running lights, and the cabin has been upgraded a bit. A rearview camera has been made standard on all 2017 Santa Fe models. A 360-degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking for forward collision mitigation are newly available this year.
Also new is the Limited Ultimate trim level we drove over the weekend.
Features & Options
The Limited Ultimate model ($41,150) comes standard with built-in turn signals for the exterior mirrors, LED taillights, keyless ignition and entry, a hands-free power rear liftgate, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and leather upholstery.
It swaps out the second-row bench seat for captain’s chairs.
Limited Ultimate models also feature 19-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree multiview camera system, a panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors, a six-way power front passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, driver memory settings, navigation, and an Infinity surround-sound audio system with an 8-inch touchscreen display.
The Ultimate Tech Package ($2,100) adds smart cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking for forward collision mitigation. HID headlights with dynamic-bending and high beam assist are also included.
Total MSRP including destination: $44,295.
Interior Highlights
Stepping inside the Santa Fe Limited Ultimate reveals a stylish cabin that’s pleasing to the eye and touch. Textures and materials look especially good and fit together well. The Ultimate trim gets upgraded matte-finish woodgrain elements that complement the revised exterior styling and move Hyundai closer to the competition. The front seats are comfortably-shaped and more supportive than the previous model.
We made liberal use of the heated seats and steering wheel this weekend as temperatures dropped into the single digits in the Denver area. The cubby in front of the gearshift came in handy to store the gloves and hats we needed before the cabin warmed up. Visibility is good out the heated rear window, and the wiper placed there made it easy to see out as the snow fell.
In the rear, the Santa Fe Limited Ultimate trim gets a six-passenger layout, making use of comfy captain’s chairs in the second row. Second-row passengers get ample legroom as well as satisfying seat comfort. The third-row bench is best for youngsters and it’s easy to access through the center of the second row seats. Rear passengers get their own climate control settings, while the second row gets heated seats and pull-down shades to keep the sun out.
Cargo space behind the third row totals 13.5 cubic feet, expanding beyond 40 cubic feet with the third row folded flat.
Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe is powered by a 3.3-liter V6 engine developing 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft. of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic. Our tester sent power to all four wheels for good all-weather capability.
Fuel economy runs about average, which isn’t the most economical. This all-wheel drive model gets an EPA estimated 17/22 city/highway and 19 combined mpg.
For 2017, the 3.3-liter V6 powertrain manages to pick up roughly 1 mpg thanks to a little engine tweaking.
Driving Dynamics
We drove the all-wheel drive model this weekend and it was a good thing we had it. We had an abundance of snow that fell in the front range and mountains west of Denver. The Santa Fe’s all-wheel drive system was solid as we powered through the snow and ice on the roads. We had no slippage even on the most challenging snow-packed and icy spots.
The V6 offers up plenty of power in all driving situations, and we pushed it hard up I-70 at altitude with no issues. The only drawback is the AWD’s fuel mileage. The gas gauge dropped quickly as we powered up the highway. There is a Drive Mode selector for ECO mode, but we found it limits performance, while saving only a little fuel.
On the road, the Santa Fe delivers a smooth ride and it’s quiet inside the cabin. Even with the Limited Ultimate’s 19-inch wheels, the suspension dampens the worst pavement surfaces and delivers a comfortable ride.
Conclusion
Families looking for a 3-row hauler will get good value from the Santa Fe. The Limited Ultimate trim gets you lots of extra luxury for a reasonable price. All-wheel drive is available for those living in cold weather climates. It has the latest safety equipment and all the latest high-tech features families are looking for.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate AWD Review
To deliver a palette-pleasing dessert, savvy pastry chefs follow proven recipes, carefully preheating the oven, beating exactly enough egg yolks to just the right consistency, prudently measuring the prescribed amount of flour, tasks that need to be executed with precision if a desirable product is to be produced.
It’s much the same with automobiles, but instead of sugar, nutmeg or heavy-duty mayonnaise, industrial concerns play with glass, plastic and hot-stamped high-strength steel. Still, just because some cook or engineer follows a time-tested formula to the letter doesn’t mean the outcome will be as desired.
It’s disappointingly common for automakers to miss the mark; they’ll have checked all the boxes, delivered every feature they set out to, but for whatever reason, a particular car or truck won’t wow the way it should. There are hidden pitfalls in both the product-development and baking processes.
Luckily for crossover shoppers in need of a spacious, three-row schlepper, Hyundai has carefully followed a winning recipe with the Santa Fe. It offers comely exterior styling, a well-thought-out cabin, generous cargo capacity and even some great driver-assistance technology. In short, Hyundai’s family hauler is hard to fault.

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate
The top-of-the-line Hyundai SUV will give competitors a run for their money.
The redesigned front fascia of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with its new headlights and brushed aluminum grille makes it one of the more attractive SUVs/crossovers on the market. Hyundai didn’t take too many chances with the body but it certainly has the right combination of hard creases and bold body lines. The Monaco White hue my test vehicle was adorned in is the optimal color in my opinion because of how it pops against the brushed aluminum accents. The 19-inch wheels are a welcomed addition as they provide some visual balance to the vehicle.
The 3.3-liter V6 under the hood produces 290 hp and 252 lb-ft torque which is good enough to get around but doesn’t do much if you need to pull out in traffic. Under immediate acceleration, there is a bit of delay so drag racing other soccer moms is definitely out of the picture. Thankfully, you still get around 20 MPG in the city which is pretty impressive for a vehicle that seats six.
And of course, because it’s a Hyundai it comes with a pretty substantial warranty program. Five year / 60,000-mile bumper to bumper, 10 year / 100,000-mile powertrain and five year / unlimited mile roadside assistance. If that doesn’t add a little confidence into your purchase decision, I don’t know what does.
Hyundai has certainly put a lot of effort into creating beautiful, functional interiors. The front seats are not only attractive and comfortable, they’re also heated and ventilated which is on par with most luxury SUVs. The massive panoramic roof is definitely a plus and comes as a standard feature on this particular model. Outside of the dated blue lighting and a couple low end plastics here and there, the interior certainly feels as if it could be in a much more expensive vehicle.
The eight-inch touchscreen navigation system comes with Android Auto which wasn’t much help for me as an iPhone user but appreciated nonetheless. The system was easy to use and the Infiniti premium sound system was stellar. The Santa Fe also came equipped with the optional Ultimate Tech Package which includes smart cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning. All of these features are well worth the $2100 addition. The mutli-view camera system was also a major plus as it was quite useful.
