2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited review: Easy-going efficiency

The Highlander Limited is good for 28 mpg on the highway.

There’s simply nothing bad about the Highlander Hybrid. It’s reasonably quick, it’s reasonably comfortable and, as far as hybrid SUVs go, it’s reasonably priced.

The Highlander feels quick when lights turn green (a little electric torque will do that to a car) and the combination of power is handled smoothly from the seat of the pants. It did startle me when I was creeping in electric mode through the parking lot and the engine kicked on — it’s loud. But in normal operation, I couldn’t feel the engine kicking on and off.

I did throw the kiddo in the back with the car seat and car seat base. It was simple to get the latches hooked, as opposed to that damn Range Rover that had me sweating and cursing before I finally connected the little seat belt-like hook with the little bar.

It’s comfortable over bumps and dips in the pavement, no need to dodge potholes. But there’s a little more cabin noise than I’d like. Steering is a little numb, but it’s easy enough. I wouldn’t predict a lot of fatigue on a long drive.

It does have a ton of space. Behind the third row there’s 13.2 cubic feet and with the back two rows folded down it jumps to more than 80, so if you need to transport stuff, this will handle the job. I suppose it would be a good vehicle for pet owners.

As for its three-row competition, I like the Mazda CX-9 a lot; the Durango we just had was nice for a road trip. You’ll notice neither of those are hybrids. I’m just not on board yet with these electrified SUVs. If it was a Volt-style plug-in maybe? Give me 40-50 miles of range per day so I almost never need gas, then I’m in. Until then, I’ll grab the biggest SUV with the smallest four banger I can find . which may actually be a Highlander, hmm.

Not sure shoppers in this segment — or maybe just of Toyotas? — are looking for much beyond the most invisible vehicle possible, and I don’t mean that as an indictment. As Jake points out, when it causes a major headache to simply install a car-seat base, that’s negative attention a vehicle should not want to draw to itself. When turning up the volume or heat or changing a radio station requires taking your eyes off the road and fidgeting with buttons, ditto. When it doesn’t move out confidently, crashes over the road, makes loading and unloading a hassle, gets uncomfortable after longer stints or in any way doesn’t perform without a glitch, it adds up to frustration that no amount of nimble road manners or sporty engine or chic styling can overcome.

The Toyota Highlander, by that measure, is a perfect family vehicle, offering equal parts ease of use and flexibility, with seating for up to eight (including reclining second- and third-row seats; total bonus!), towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds and 42.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. All the major controls are within easy eyes-on-the-road reach, and I particularly like how many places there are to stash stuff in and around the center console—especially the shelf under the HVAC controls that extends all the way to the passenger door.

As for the hybrid-ness of this particular model, I’m with Jake — 3 more highway mpg isn’t worth the $8,000 premium. Then consider it’s fully $13,000 more than a base V6 model and any argument in its favor evaporates completely.

The Toyota Highlander looks like it could tackle some rough terrain, but it’s better suited for a family’s rough use. The Hybrid model we tested is also good for getting the best fuel economy in the midsize crossover category. Families looking for versatility, comfort, practicality, all-weather capability, and three-row seating need to keep reading.

This week we test drove the 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited AWD.

What’s New For 2016?

Highlander received a complete redesign in 2014. There are no significant changes for 2016.

Features & Options

The 2016 Limited Platinum ($50,485) is the top of the range for the Highlander lineup. It comes standard with all-wheel-drive, 19-inch wheels, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, second-row captain’s chairs, heated/ventilated front seats, and a power front passenger seat.

Highlander Limited Platinum includes the Driver Technology Package with Safety Connect, pre-collision with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, heated rear captain’s chairs, and rain-sensing wipers.

Total MSRP including destination: $51,385.

Interior Highlights

The cabin of the Limited Platinum model is extra luxurious and the leather seats are comfy for long trips. This model borders on being a true luxury vehicle with its refinement touches and plenty of soft-touch materials throughout the roomy cabin. The cabin is more car-like which is good for growing families who are on the go.

The navigation system features a large touchscreen, with many of the functions using real buttons which we like. We cranked up the heated seats and heated steering wheel, and kept warm with the late winter snowfall in Denver this week.

Visibility is excellent in the Highlander, thanks to a larger rear-quarter window and repositioned pillars. The 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited gets twin reclining captains chairs that can be pushed back for maximum legroom. We carried two large passengers this week who were lounging in the back on the way to the restaurant.

The third row works good for smaller kids and access is easy with the captains chairs. Cargo space totals 13.8 cubic feet behind the third row, and there’s plenty of versatility for busy families with a maximum of 83.7 cubic feet, with the seats folded flat.

Engine & Fuel Mileage Specs

The 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes with a V-6 mated to a continuously variable transmission (eCVT) sending power to all four wheels. Total output with the hybrid drivetrain is 280 horsepower. The Hybrid is rated at an EPA-estimated 27/28 mpg city/highway and 28 combined.

We didn’t come anywhere close to that, but we tested the vehicle at altitude and pushed it hard most of the week.

Driving Dynamics

Because the Hybrids are heavier than the gas models, acceleration is a bit slower. Once underway, however, the cabin is comfortable and quiet. Our passengers kicked back, put the rear window shades up, and chilled as we drove around town. The suspension is somewhat compliant and it smooths out the bumps and rough road surfaces.

If you want a smoother ride, opt for the 18 inch wheels over the 19 inch.

Power in the Highlander hybrid is strong enough for most driving situations. We pushed the crossover hard up I-70 at altitude and had enough power to pass slower traffic. The all-wheel-drive worked well in the snow this week too. It tackled the slick streets, and we felt secure in its all-weather abilities on the ice.

The suite of safety features were evident this week as well. We heard the sounds associated with the system, like traction control, alerting us to various safety hazards as we drove in traffic. It helped us feel secure in the bad weather.

Conclusion

The three-row Highlander will be a good choice for growing families on the go. It’s easy to live with and offers plenty of utility and cargo space. We particularly liked the second row captains chairs that offer more comfort for adults and teens. This crossover won’t get you away from civilization like other more rugged vehicles, but it’s a good choice for city dwellers.

The 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited Platinum is an extra luxurious, family-friendly, all-weather crossover that gets the best fuel mileage in the range.
