The AMG behind the Hammer

Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded the company in 1967 as racing engine forge. The fact that they were former Mercedes-Benz engineers implied a connection which would only get stronger over time. The positive results in terms of tuned cars first led to a contract of cooperation with Daimler in 1993. The company bought 51% of its shares in 1999 and the rest in 2005, making it a wholly owned subsidiary.

The main reason for such success is that the companies developed something like biological mutualism. AMG provided technical excellence and a strong image regarding sporty versions of city cars. Mercedes-Benz responded with the demand of a large dealer network and larger production volumes. Performance fans were tuning their cars at AMG on their own anyway, so why not make things easier for them?

In the cabin, the goal was luxury. AMG cars featured the complete package, including Hi-Fi audio system, air conditioner, power assistance for several functions, exclusive steering wheel, and Recaro leather seats. The tuner only wanted them to replace Mercedes-Benz’s opulent and conservative air with a sporty and casual image. The AMG Hammer was quite expensive, but it was hard to beat in the German market.

When it comes to engines, AMG would fit the 300 CE with the bigger brother 560 SEC’s 5.5L V8. However, that was not enough for the Hammer. The tuner replaced the engine’s cylinder units with twin-cam heads of four valves each, and increased the displacement to 6.0 liters. There are also dual catalytic converters, a limited-slip differential, and a reinforced subframe. US-spec units had a four-speed automatic gearbox.

Whether in sedan, coupé, or station wagon body, the AMG Hammer was more than car tuning. It was an evolution; a reinterpretation that turned out to be better in almost every way. The design tweaks made it brasher than what one would expect from a Mercedes-Benz, but that was the goal. Сам автомобиль мне по душе, нужно еще было фото салона, так как экстерьером этот тюнинг не особо отличается от стока.

А мне не очень. Такая громоздкая внешность хорошо подходит седану Hammer, а купешка в таком виде смотрится какой-то чересчур тяжёлой. И, действительно, внешних отличий от стока не очень много. Куда лучше в этом плане получился 560 SEC WideBody.

С середины 1988 года предлагалась более мощная версия двигателя Daimler Benz M.117 E60-32 AMG с усовершенствованной системой впрыска ( 402 л.с./5500 и 595 Нм/4000) для модели 300СE AMG 6.0 Hammer, с которым 1550-кг ( полная масса — 1980 кг) купе могло развить максимальную скорость 300 км/час, и разогнаться до 100 км/час за 5,5 секунды.

Long before the AMG GT Black Series set the production lap record around the Nurburgring Nordschleife, its forebearers were wholly separate from Mercedes-Benz itself. The AMG brand was a tuning company all its own and perhaps its most notorious creation was the 6.0 Hammer Coupe. Now, one of just 13 examples ever crafted for North America is about to go up for auction.

AMG wasn’t like the vast majority of tuning companies you might think of today, though. Oftentimes when we see a tuning company modify a car it has little more than just a few new parts here and there and then some sort of ECU tuning to release a little more power. To create the Hammer coupe, AMG started by swapping the original 3.0-liter engine for a 5.5-liter V8 – but they didn’t stop there.

Extensive modifications to that engine took place before it was installed. Not only did AMG blueprint the motor but it bored it out to 6.0-liters, balanced the internals, and then changed it from a single-cam, two-valve-per-cylinder pair of heads to a twin-cam, four-valve setup. That ultimately resulted in 385 hp (287 kW) and 417 lb-ft 564 Nm) of torque.

To look at this car you’d think it had just rolled off of the production line too. The engine bay looks so clean that you could dine off of it. The interior also appears immaculate despite having 19,417 miles (31,248 km) on the odometer. According to the listing, the vehicle was stored for some 15 years prior to 2021 when it was restored to fully running condition.

It’s estimated that some 30 AMG Hammers were produced worldwide. This particular example was crafted in the USA specifically for the US Market. Of the 13 cars built for North America, just five coupes were made for the USA. That makes it one of the rarest classic Mercedes from this era.

The auction house, The MB Market, says that this is the “first time an AMG Hammer is being offered for sale via a U.S.-based auction or any online auction platform worldwide.” Considering its rarity, we wouldn’t be shocked to see it go for a hefty sum.
