Вслед за «пятеркой» BMW обновлению подверглись и ее разновидности, которые предлагает частная немецкая фирма Alpina. Две компании сотрудничают давно и плотно, поэтому работы над заводскими и альпиновскими модификациями «пятерки» шли параллельно, и последние увидели свет с минимальной задержкой.
Вслед за донорскими автомобилями модели BMW Alpina B5 и BMW Alpina D5 S обрели новую светотехнику и более крупную решетку радиатора. Но если прежде Alpina использовала для своих машин стандартные бамперы, дополненные накладками, то обновленные машины имеют более агрессивные M-бамперы. В стандартную комплектацию входят оригинальные 20-дюймовые колеса.
Бензиновые седаны и универсалы BMW Alpina B5 по-прежнему используют доработанный двигатель V8 4.4 с парой двухпоточных турбокомпрессоров. Мощность увеличена с 608 до 621 л.с., хотя крутящий момент прежний — 800 Нм при 2000 об/мин. Восьмиступенчатый «автомат» и полноприводная трансмиссия слегка перенастроены. В итоге седан может разогнаться до 100 км/ч за 3,4 с против 3,5 с у дореформенной модели, хотя показатель универсала прежний (3,6 с). Максимальная скорость — 330 и 322 км/ч соответственно.
Дизельные модели BMW Alpina D5 S тоже сохранили прежний шестицилиндровый дизель 3.0 с тремя турбокомпрессорами. Мощность выросла с 388 до 408 л.с. при неизменном крутящем моменте (800 Нм при 1750 об/мин). Но если прежде такая Alpina не сильно отличалась по характеристикам от заводской модели BMW M550d, то теперь конкуренции нет: в BMW отказались от четырехнаддувного дизеля, и самой мощной осталась версия 540d (340 л.с.). Динамические характеристики Альпины после обновления не изменились: седан с восьмиступенчатым «автоматом» и полным приводом набирает «сотню» за 4,4 с, универсал — 4,6 с, максимальная скорость — 286 и 283 км/ч соответственно.
И бензиновая, и дизельная Альпины имеют электронноуправляемые амортизаторы Bilstein, а универсалы — еще и заднюю пневмоподвеску. Активные стабилизаторы теперь тоже включены в базовую комплектацию, а вот подруливающий механизм задних колес больше не предлагается. Зато самоблокирующийся задний дифференциал теперь можно заказать не только для бензиновых, но и для дизельных машин, а вдобавок за доплату впервые предложены углерод-керамические тормоза.
Вместе с базовой «пятеркой» Alpina перешла на новые рисованные приборы, изменив под себя лишь шрифты на шкалах и цветовую гамму. Сохранился выбор между фирменными кнопками переключения передач на тыльной стороне руля и более привычными лепестками. Как всегда, можно заказать полную перешивку салона нежной кожей Lavalina.
Обновленные «пятерки» уже доступны для заказа. BMW Alpina D5 S в Германии стоит от 92500 евро, а BMW Alpina B5 — от 117700 евро. Увы, на российском рынке Alpina сейчас официально не представлена.

The problem is that some of them may have been “equipped with second-row outboard seats that may contain head restraints with a design configuration intended for a different vehicle model”, which “may not contain the specific number of notches on the attachment rods inserted into the seatback”, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains.

Needless to say that the incorrect head restraints would not secure backseat occupants in the event of a collision, as they could simply detach, resulting in serious injury. The problem, which is blamed on the supplier, Grammer Americas of Mexico, affects a total of 258 vehicles in North America, such as the the 2021 Alpina XB7, BMW X7 xDrive40i and X7 M50i, X5 xDrive 45e, X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 M50i. These will all be inspected by the automaker’s authorized technicians, who will replace the components if necessary.
BMW will reach out to owners on May 3 via First Class mail, instructing them to take their rides to an authorized center for the remedy. Dealers were informed earlier this month and the recall is expected to begin in the first week of May. BMW’s customer service can be contacted at 1-800-525-7417 by concerned owners who want to find out more about the recall, and they can also get in touch with the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.

This year, the big change to the X5 lineup can be summed up in three words: even more performance. BMW has added a fourth member to the stable, the M50i, which pummels the asphalt with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8—up 67 horsepower and 74 lb-ft from the xDrive50i’s similar 4.4-liter V-8. The M50i package includes a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, an M Sport exhaust, bigger brakes, and sportier suspension tuning with adaptive dampers.

BMW has revealed the new X5 Protection VR6, an armoured version of its popular luxury SUV.
According to the Bavarian marque, the X5 Protection VR6 «offers private individuals and persons at risk customised protection against violent attacks, kidnapping or organised crime».Power in the X5 Protection VR6 comes from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine borrowed from the xDrive50i variant. Maximum power is rated at 390kW between 5500 and 6000rpm, while a peak torque figure of 750Nm is on tap between 1800rpm and 4600rpm.
The X5 Protection VR6, named in reference to its certified protection rating, is almost indistinguishable from the standard X5, but is clad all over in high-strength steel armour plating, which overlaps at each panel and trim gap to maximise coverage.
Underneath, a thick aluminium splinter shield protects the powertrain and floor from explosive devices such as hand grenades, while the standard X5’s windows have been replaced with 33mm thick, polycarbonate-reinforced glass.
The glazing features what BMW calls ‘post-blast protective technology’, which offers protection against secondary attacks in the wake of an explosion. Only the driver’s window is electric as standard, although an electric passenger window is an option.

Although it looks like the standard model, the new X5 Protection VR6’s armor-plated bodywork protects against attacks by handguns and firearms, including AK-47s. The armored passenger compartment withstands blasts of up to 15 kilograms of TNT from a distance of 13 feet, and its Post Blast Protective Technology protects against secondary attacks; even following a blast, all windows remain firmly in position.The vehicle is fitted with high-strength steel panels in the doors, side frames, roof, and firewall. Overlapping armor plating within the door gaps and bodywork joints prevent penetration by bullets or fragments. Oh, and your suitcases will be safe as well, thanks to aluminum pieces guarding the underbody and luggage compartment.
