2014 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI Prestige review notes
SENIOR ROAD TEST EDITOR NATALIE NEFF: Despite this beautiful beast sitting in my driveway for a weekend, the 2014 Audi Q7 TDI unfortunately had little need to do much else. Two days of gloriously needed, long-awaited warm spring weather meant we spent most of free our time at home, outside, letting the kid soak up a winter’s worth of vitamin D and fall down on sidewalks instead of hardwood (he has the strawberried goose egg to prove it, poor child). Still, a drive to and from the office was enough to remind me that if I had need of such a gargantuan set of wheels, there are 99 worse ways to go than with a vehicle like the Q7 TDI.
The powertrain alone makes for a compelling argument in the Q7’s favor. That 406 lb-ft of torque just pours out of the engine, easily erasing the 5,400-plus pounds this beast carries at the curb. That it’s “just” a six-cylinder only makes it more impressive. V8, schmee-eight.
The rest of the package is easily up to the level we’ve come to expect from things dubbed “Audi.” The quality and feel of the interior, the shapely care with which the body is molded, the number and caliber of the amenities and features; all feel as if they’re given the highest regard by a team of craftsmen who call themselves Audi designers and engineers.
That said, it also means what starts out like a $53,000 vehicle quickly morphs into an over-$81,000 machine. True, I didn’t feel like I wanted for anything in this Q7, but I’m not entirely convinced it makes for $81K’s worth of satisfaction. $70K maybe? I don’t know, “value” is a hard thing to pin down by any quantitative means. The $114,000 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4matic wagon I drove the week prior was worth every penny; the near-$50K 328d xDrive sport wagon the week before that, not so much.
Perhaps like porn, it’s a thing known when seen. Or driven.
DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: As good as this Q7 TDI is — and it’s plenty good — I still feel like our long-term Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec, with which it goes nose-to-nose in the marketplace, is the better vehicle. The Benz rides more smoothly, feels better built and just offers a more premium feel than the Audi, which I think would be a compelling entry at $60K, but is handily outclassed at $80K by its crosstown rival.
That said, Audi’s lovely interior design is on display in the Q7: The dash flows forward into the windshield giving an airy feel to the cabin. Our Q was equipped with a panoramic moonroof and Alcantara headliner that adds to the openness. As good as the design is, the functionality is wanting: The dash layout itself is less engaging than, say, the Audi A6 — there’s kind of a mishmash of buttons and a too-small infotainment screen for the size of this SUV. An example of the button weirdness is a glovebox access button not on the dash or the glovebox itself, but on the center stack beside the navigation screen, labeled with an unintuitive graphic. It’s not a big deal, but it’s out of character with Audi’s normally well-thought-out vehicles.
The exterior design doesn’t do much for me either. I find Audi’s Q5 a gorgeous example of the midsize crossover, yet the Q7 just looks like an ovoid Ford Explorer or an old Mercedes-Benz R-class. Fat tires help offer a touch of sportiness, but again the Mercedes GL pulls off the luxury SUV look far more effectively.
There’s a lot to like about the Audi Q7, and apparently customers are willing to see past some of its deficiencies. While Q7 sales are significantly lower than those of the Mercedes GL, Audi has seen an increase in Q7 sales in 2014 while GL is down year-over-year. Either way, you can’t go wrong.
The 2014 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI Prestige comes in at a base price of $53,795 with our tester reaching $81,795.
SENIOR MOTORSPORTS EDITOR MAC MORRISON: Caught between Neff and Stoy, I am. You’ll want for nothing in this Q7 as equipped … but c’mon, $28K in options? Seriously, Audi? Most of it I could do without — 21-inch wheels and tires, matte black roof rails, headlight washer, adaptive air suspension, etc. — so it’s possible to slash some bucks off the final sticker here, but at the same time some of those items are what buyers in this class crave.
I usually don’t have such hunger, but I do to some extent with this particular vehicle because without it, you’re left with what I find is Audi’s least appealing body design matched to a dearth of the Inspector Gadget-worthy features that do take it up a notch.
The Q7 is the roly-poly of Audi’s present lineup; the clean, well-executed and trimmed exterior and interior are somehow simultaneously top-notch yet plain-Jane, at least in recent Audi context — especially that isopod crustacean-like body.
Driving the Q7 is mostly a pleasure, though the brakes are spongy and the engine’s idle vibration/buzz just a wee bit annoying in some instances, mostly with the radio off and driving in otherwise silence. Once again, however, the ride is relaxing, the steering effortless and the utility solid.
Perhaps the Q7 is a vehicle that I would absolutely — perhaps more than many — recommend people test drive, if only to verify that it suits them compared to some competitors. The package polarizes me enough that this is the best advice I can offer.

But for a couple of sketchy, short-lived gigs right out of college, Natalie Neff has had the good fortune to spend the entirety of her professional life around cars. A 2017 Honda Ridgeline, 1972 VW Beetle, 1999 Ducati Monster and a well-loved purple-and-white five-speed Schwinn currently call her garage home.
